John Rogers was the original St. Johns ancestor, having settled in the fall of 1833 in the territory vacated in 1832 by the Shawnee when they re-established to a reservation in Kansas. The site lies between the two forks of Blackhoof Creek and comprised 240 acres in Section 5 of Clay Twp., which is now in Auglaize County This area was part of Allen County in 1833. The original plat of the Bitler/Rogers Village of St. John's was filed in the office of the Allen County Recorder on April 29, 1835. It is located at what is now the junction of Rt 33 and Rt 65 , south of Lima, Ohio. Sometime before 1840 a post office was opened and John Rogers was postmaster. Afterward he held the office of Justice of the Peace and also was a Colonel of the Militia. The first meeting house in St. John's was built of logs on a lot deeded to the Trustees of the Methodist Church, by John Rogers Sr. in 1849. 1880 Obituary states Colonel John Rogers died April 30, 1880 in St. Johns, Ohio at the age of 80. He accompanied his parents in early life to Sussex Co., New Jersey and then came to Ohio in 1814. In 1821 he married Miss Mary Hadley of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, whom he survived nearly 40 years. In 1851 he married Mrs. Nancy A. Bechdolt, nee Coleman, daughter of James Coleman. His wife is 86 years old, has 7 children - Elizie H., George M., Michland Y., Alfred, John, Mrs. Jane Sommers and Mrs. Emma Looney. 11 grand children and 8 great grand children. United with St. Johns M. E. church in April of 1878. Came to St. Johns, Ohio., in 1832. Buried in St. Johns Cemetery.
