He passed away on July 20, 1987, at Turlock, California. In childhood he moved, together with his family, to Jansen, Nebraska. After a few years they moved to Hillsboro, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. At the age of eleven, he felt God called him, yielded to Him and ha his sins forgiven. On May 20, 1906, he was baptized and became a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, bein true to his vows until death. In September, 1913, he married Susanna Hoeppner. To this union one son, Jacob, was born. The same day Susie passed away, leaving him alone with a new baby. After a few years he married Mary Hoeppner at Hillsboro, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born, Mary and Frieda. Soon after Frieda's birth, Mary passed away, leaving him very lonely with three small children. On August 8, 1920, he married Annie Penner Spence, who had been left alone with four children. They shared life with its joys and sorrows for over fifty years. Two children, Dick and Annie, were born to this union. In January, 1924, they moved to Winton, California, living there until they moved to the Glenn, California community in 1954. Here he continued to farm. On March 22, 1971, his wife passed away. After her passing he lived with his children, often visiting relatives and friends near and far. He leaves to mourn: 2 sons, Jake H. and wife Agnes, of Sun City, Arizona, and Dick and wife Alice, of Glenn, California; 4 daughters: Catherine Loewen of Walnut Hill, Florida; Marie Loewen of Winton, California; Mary Giesbrecht of Glenn, California, and Annie and husband Walter Ensz of Artois, California; 2 daughters-in-law: Susie Spence of Glenn, California; and Leona Spence of Willows, California; 68 grandchildren, 213 great-grandchildren, 132 great-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-great-grandchildren. One sister Greta Fast of Othello, Washington, one brother-in-law: Abe Penner of Moundridge, Kansas. Those preceding him in death were: 2 sons, Jack Spence and Harry Spence; a daughter, Frieda; 3 sons-in-law; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services were held at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Glenn, California, on July 24, 1987. Ministers Les Amoth, John Wiens, and Robert Koehn officiated. Burial was in the Willows Cemetery.
