"Jake" Jacobson, 57, of Des Moines, formerly of Cambridge, died on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at his home in Des Moines after a 22 month battle with cancer. He was born on July 17, 1946 in Ames to Jordan and Ethel J. (Wakeham) Jacobson. He grew up in Nevada until he joined the U.S. Army in 1964 serving in Germany and during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he settled in Des Moines where he worked several years at Firestone and Dico, Inc. In 1997, he moved to Cambridge where he opened Uncle Levi's Bar and Grill. In addition to supporting many community functions, he was a Charter Commander of Amvet Post #67 in Cambridge and a member of the American Legion. He married Rhonda Hasty on Aug. 16, 2003 in Des Moines. Country music was his greatest enjoyment in life. He had several bands through the years, attended many Jam sessions, and was a member of Ther Professional Musicians and Entertainers Club of Iowa. He also enjoyed collectiong antiques. He moved to Des Moines from Cambridge in January of this year. Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Jacobson of Des Moines; three sisters, Norma Okland of Ames, Shirley Carmack of Nevada and Marlene Ball of Des Moines; four brothers, Richard (and Helen) Opperman of Ames, Jack Oppermand of Florida, Robert Opperman and Jordan "Junior" (and Rose)Opperman, both of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Wade Jacobson in 1980; three brothers, William Opperman on Aug. 9, 1994, Mike Jacobson on Feb. 15, 2002, and Jerry Jacobson; and a sister, Beverly Jacobson in July of 2002. A graveside memorial service with military rites was held on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Evergreen Memory Gardens north of Nevada with Pastor David Burling officiating.
