McGrew Dallas Newton McGrew was born 21 Jun 1890 to William E. and Joanna Hagood McGrew at their farm home northeast of Emerson. He passed away Sun. morning Apr 18. Except for short periods he had lived all of his nearly 81 years on the same farm. Dallas graduated from the Henderson High School and from Iowa State College at Ames. He served in France with the 20th Balloon Co. in WWI and returned to be married 27 Nov 1919 to Mary Helen Wilson. Three children were born to Dallas and Helen: William Edwin and Everett Ralph of this community and Martha Joanna Daur of Falls Church, VA. He was a devoted member of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church where he served many years as teacher, superintendent, key leader, board member, and in every segment of church life. Indicative of the load he carried is this one instance: when the play, "Peter the Rock," was produced in 1928, Dallas played Peter. Dallas gave of his talents wherever his life touched that of others. His rich baritone voice was a part of the State College quartet while he was there and later of church music groups. He helped in nearly every phase of community activity: the local school board, the Mills County fair board, Henderson Telephone Co., Producers Livestock Marketing Assn., and on the Mills Co. Board of Supervisors. His tact, diplomacy, wit and good humor made any civic effort better when he was a part of it. It was in his chosen field of agriculture that Dallas' talents and accomplishments received the most public recognition. He helped organize the Farm Bureau in Mills Co. and served as its first president. He was honored 2 yrs ago as a pioneer Farm Bureau leader. He was chairman of the Mills Co. Soil-Conservation District, and in 1957 was named outstanding commissioner in IA. In 1954 he received the Iowa Master Farmer award. Dallas took great pride in his home and family and was a loving father and grandfather. Few men see as many of their hopes and dreams fulfilled as did Dallas. His was a rich, full and rewarding life: He had truly coined the phrase: "Well done." His wife, Helen, preceded him in death on 3 May 1964. He is survived by his 3 children, 10 grandsons, a sister, Mildred Jordan, and a brother, Melvin, who has made his home with Dallas for several years. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at Wesley chapel United Methodist Wed. at 2 p.m., the Rev. Delbert Terry, Officient. Casket bearers were Ben, Harold, Marion and John Wilson; Eric Nyren and Kenneth Sowers. Honorary bearers were Donald Hoffman, Harry Anderson, I. E. Brammeier, Paul Vestal, Henry Washburn and Clint Parker. Ushers were Joe Robbins and Lorence Dale. Music was furnished by Mrs. Lloydean Steen, pianist, and Mrs. Charles Vestal, soloist. Mrs. Don Godfrey was at the registry book. Caring for the floral tributes were Mrs. Ben Wilson, Mrs. Eric Nyren and Mrs. Joyce Lathrop. Interment was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, with Nelson Funeral Home in charge.
