The subject of this memorial, Daniel Cox, died at the County Home of Jefferson county, Iowa, just outside the city limits of Fairfield, Iowa. Unfortunately, when the County Home ceased operations in the early 1970's all of the patient/resident files were destroyed, so those records are lost for review and use. ------------------ Fairfield Daily Ledger-Journal Friday July 7, 1922 Pg. 1 Col. 1 DANIEL COX DIED AT COUNTY HOME Succumbed to Pneumonia After Several Days of Illness. Daniel Cox passed away yesterday morning at the County Home, after a few days illness of pneumonia. Although he had been in poor health the last several days his condition was not considered serious until a short time before his death. He was 86 years of age. Mr. Cox was born in Guernesey county (sic), Ohio, June 16th, 1836, where he grew to manhood. In the first years of his married life he came to Fairfield and since that time had made his home here. Following the death of his wife a number of years ago, he lived with his son William, who died two years ago, and since that time has been a resident of the County Home. The only relatives who surviving him are Bert Cox, a son, and three grandchildren, Francis, Velma and Dale Cox, and a sister Mrs. Rachel Despain. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at ten o'clock from the home of Mrs. Rachel Despain, 504 West Jefferson street, and will be in charge of Rev. O. B. Devine of the Free Methodist church. The body will be laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery. ---------------- Marriages (from a family group sheet prepared in June 1993): 1. Elizabeth Baker 2. Elenora Lewis 3. Catherine Mefford 4. Unknown 5. Annie Curtis ----------------- Children: The obituaries for Daniel Cox did not name any other children other than a William Cox who evidently died in or about 1919/1920. There is, however, a man also buried in Evergreen cemetery who was born in/about 1861 and who died on December 31, 1907 in Fairfield, Iowa. His Jefferson county Iowa death record listed the father as "Daniel Cox" (name of mother not listed, however), so it is possible that this was at least one other adult descendant of this Daniel Cox. See: Abraham Lincoln Cox. Because this relationship is speculation at best, no direct relationship links between them are made at this time (a/o May 21, 2016, that is).
