Description	:	After the death of his wife, Nancy McNeill Holt, David Holt married Nancy Shane in 1846. The family went to visit his daughter, Susan Holt McCaslin, near Huntingdon in Carroll Co., TN. On Jan. 26,1865, roving bushwhackers, or guerillas, rode in demanding food, silver and everything of value. They killed David Holt, who was trying to protect his womenfolk in the house. They left him lying by the gate and rode out into a back field where they killed his son-in-law, John McCaslin, and John's brother, Riley McCaslin, a Union soldier. The family went to visit his daughter, Susan Holt McCaslin, near Huntingdon in Carroll Co., TN. On Jan. 26,1865, roving bushwhackers, or guerillas, rode in demanding food, silver and everything of value. They killed David Holt, who was trying to protect his womenfolk in the house. They left him lying by the gate and rode out into a back field where they killed his son-in-law, John McCaslin, and John's brother, Riley McCaslin, a Union soldier. They returned to the house, pushed the women and children aside, and ate the food from the table. After ransacking the bedrooms, they came out dragging two feather ticks, which they cut open, and ran through the house and yard strewing feathers as they went. They got on their horses, taking Riley McCaslin's horse with them. They called back, "Come out and get your old man; he is dying out by the gate." Throughout all this, David Holt's seven-year-old grandson, Haskell McCaslin, watched and saw all the menfolk killed. All three men are buried at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church Cemetery in Leach, TN. They are buried in a row with sandstones as their headstones. NOTE: Someone has upgraded their stones since their death and since this article was written, as their stones are no longer sandstone. David Holt was married 1st to Nancy Rebecca McNeil (b. ca 1810, d. ca 1845) on 17 Dec 1822 in Cumberland Co., NC. They had at least 10 children. He married 2nd to Nancy Elizabeth Shane on 16 April 1846 in Gibson Co., TN. They had at least 4 children. He was the son of John Holt (unverified notes state he was b. 11 Feb 1760 in Spotsylvania Co., PA) and Frances Jackson.
