David Joe Alcock was born August 21, 1958 in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Leland and Thelma (Hemingson) Alcock. He graduated from Tripoli High School in Tripoli, Iowa with the Class of 1976. Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Technology at the University of Northern Iowa in December 1979 after 3½ years of study. He attended UNI on a full tuition scholarship and was the 1980 recipient of a distinguished Purple and Old Gold Award in the College of Natural Sciences. Dave earned a Master of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1986. Dave began his career teaching high school and junior high industrial arts and assisted coaching varsity level sports in the Bondurant-Farrar Schools in Bondurant, Iowa from 1980-1984. He taught high school computer science and coached 7th grade basketball and 8th grade football in the Norwalk Community Schools in Norwalk, Iowa from 1985-1990. From 1991-2004, Dave was the Information Technology Director for the Howard-Winneshiek School District in Cresco, Iowa. In July 2004, he began work as the Manager of Technology for the Decorah Community Schools. Dave also worked as a Technology Consultant for Northern Trails Area Education Agency in Clear Lake, Iowa from 1984-1985 and 1990-1991. Dave and his wife, Sherry, have three children: Matt, Emily, and Rebecca. Dave's family was very important to him. He was a loving husband, devoted father and loyal son and brother. He loved to spend time with his children and enjoyed teaching them all the things they would need to know to live life to the fullest. Dave loved the outdoors and many of the activities associated with being in natural surroundings and had a particular passion for canoeing in the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Sherry loved camping in their RV with their children - spending time together around the campfire, hiking and biking. Dave was gifted with many talents and shared his expertise of computing with many neighbors and friends. Dave had a wonderful personality and was well respected and admired by those who knew him. He was very capable with his hands and was able to build just about anything. Dave was an active member of Decorah Lutheran Church - ushering, serving on the church council and helping the congregation in many other ways. He was also a willing volunteer for many school and community activities. Dave died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at his home at the age of 46 years. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Survivors include his wife, Sherry of Decorah; his son, Matt Alcock and his two daughters, Emily and Rebecca Alcock, all of Decorah; his parents, Leland and Thelma Alcock of Waverly, IA; a sister, Bonnie (Ray) Joecken of Waverly, IA; two brothers, Al (Cathy) Alcock of Mason City, IA and Rick (Sue) Alcock of Oskaloosa, IA; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Beverly and Grant Larson of Rochester, MN; three brothers-in-law, Barry (Pat) Braun of Littleton, CO, Ron (Darlene) Braun of Moorhead, MN, Rod (Nance) Braun of Rochester, MN; three sisters-in-law, Sandy (Mark) Steck of Canton, SD, Sharon (Bill) Wefring of Eden Prairie, MN and Peggy (Pete) Ellefsen of Indianapolis, IN; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
