PURCELL Dayle K. Purcell, 81, Missouri Valley, died March 26, at his residence in Missouri Valley. Dayle was born Feb. 27, 1925 in Missouri Valley to Harold and Viola (Smith). Dayle attended and graduated from Missouri Valley High School in May of 1942. Dayle married Mildred Day, Nov. 15, 1944 in Los Angeles, Calif. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Connie. Dayle served in the armed forces as a U.S. Marine during World War II, and was stationed in the South Pacific. They returned to Missouri Valley after his discharge from active service. Dayle worked at Schwertley Chevrolet Garage, Missouri Valley, as parts manager; and then went on to work as the Harrison County Assessor, a position he held from 1963 to 1988. During this time, he became a Certified Appraiser. In 1974 he was President of the Iowa State Association of Assessors. In October of 1990, Dayle lost his beloved wife, Mildred. Dayle was a member of the United Methodist Church, Valley Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and the American Legion. He received his fifty-year membership pin of the Royal Arch Masons of Iowa in 2000. He was a past member of the Missouri Valley Kiwanis and the Harrison County Historical Society. He enjoyed golfing, boating, water skiing and fishing with the family. Many summer weekends were spent at DeSoto water skiing and ending with barbecues at the house. Dayle enjoyed genealogy. He was a direct descendent of Daniel Boone. He assisted many people with their genealogy needs. His research in Harrison County resulted in the finding of four 1812 War veterans. These graves were marked by the Nebraska Society of the United States Daughters of 1812, one while his wife was president of the Nebraska of the Nebraska Society of United States Daughters of 1812. From his joy of genealogy research he joined the Sons of the American Revolution in Omaha. He was Chapter President and in 1988 he became the Nebraska State President. He searched and wrote genealogy histories for the United Methodist Church in Missouri Valley, Sons of the American Revolution and the United States Daughters of 1812 in Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mildred, and a nephew. Survivors include: his daughter, Connie Campbell, and her husband, David, Missouri Valley; granddaughter, Melodi Szymczak and her husband, Michael, and granddaughter, Morgan, Omaha; one sister, Lucille Thornberg and her husband, Roger, Lakeland, Fla., and many nephews, family and friends. Funeral Services were held April 3 at the First United Methodist Church, Missouri Valley, Pastor Bob Dagit, officiant. Organist was Genelle Riesland, vocalist was Sharon Walton, reader was Kathy Winther. Casket Bearers were: Michael Szymczak, Christopher Wood, Richard Hurley, Scott Bott, Rick Wood, and Jerry Matheny. Interment was in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Missouri Valley. Military Honors were conducted by Julius F. Muller Post No. 337, American Legion, Missouri Valley. Hennesseay-Aman Funeral Home, Missouri Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Published in The Missouri Valley Times-News (Missouri Valley, Iowa) in 2006.
