Read More	******************************************** Dean L. Hawks, 88, of rural Hiawatha, died Monday evening, January 23, 2012, at Hiawatha Community Hospital. Dean was born October 31, 1923, on the family farm southwest of Hiawatha, one of three children of Robert and Florence Moser Hawks. He grew up on the family farm, attended Fairfield County School prior to graduating from Powhattan High School with the class of 1941. Dean attended Kansas State University for a time. Mr. Hawks was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha. Through the years, Dean was very active within the Church: serving on various committees and boards, and served as deacon. Dean was also a member of Gideon's International. After he retired, he enjoyed drinking coffee with friends. He also enjoyed raising big gardens, always donating the excess to the local food pantry. He married Helen Ruth Holder, August 14, 1949, at the Baptist Church at Hiawatha. They started their married life on the Hawks Family Farm which in 1957, was noted as a Century Farm. She survives of the home. Also surviving are three daughters: Cynthia (Doug) Greer of Savannah, MO, Nancy (Dan) Russell of Fulton, MO, Sharon (Rolland) Fraser of Carl Junction, MO; a brother Bob Hawks of Tulsa, OK; 5 grandchildren: Katie Greer, Jordan Greer, Nicholas Russell, Kaitlin Fraser, and Faith Fraser. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Dorothy Page. A celebration of Dean's life is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, January 27, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, with Pastor Greg Pudwill will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 9 a.m. until 4 Thursday. The family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 Thursday evening at the Family Life Center.
