Dewitt J. Emry the son of Richard Alson and Elizabeth Swain Emry was born on August 13, 1895 at Madison, Nebr., and passed away at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Ft Lyons, Colorado on Sep 12, at the age of 79 years. Mr Emry, known to many of his friends as "John" moved with his parents when he was a small boy to Sweetwater, Nebraska, there he was educated in the Sweetwater schools, later the family moved to Comstock. When he was about 20 years old he came to Colorado where he worked at Gilman in the metal mines. During World War I he enlisted in the United States Army serving the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe, having been engaged in several battles as part of a machine gun battalion. Battles included the Battle of Meuse, Battle of Marne and Battle of Argonne. Following his military service he returned to Nebraska and lived for two years at Erickson before coming to Colorado where he homesteaded on Coulter Mesa. Mr Emry had worked for various ranches in the Rifle area. Mr Emry was united in marriage with Mae Wyning and later divorced. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister. Survivors include several nephews and nieces including, Frank Conner of New Castle; two nieces, Mrs Steve (Helen) Carroll of Rifle and Mrs Elmer (Elizabeth) Curran of Collbran, other relatives and many friends. 1917: Drafted into the Army. SN: 3,228,587. Residence Ericson, Wheeler Co., NE. Place of birth: Madison, Nebraska, age 22 1/2 yrs, Co C 355 Inf Rgt. until 1 Apr 1918. Then in 137th Machine Gun Company. Appointed Corporal 18 Oct 1918. Served overseas 25 Apr 1918 - 23 Apr 1919. Discharged 9 May 1919. Dewitt has lived in Rifle, Colorado since his sister's death in 1951.
