Description	:	Dominick Mattingly was born in Somerset Co. PA March 6, 1808. Dominick and John Mattingly, brothers, came to Garrett Co. MD in January 1831 and bought 157 acres of land on the Youghiogheny River above the mouth of Sang Run (Ginseng Run) for $196.56. They cleared this land. John built his house on the hillside above the Run and Dominick built by a spring up the River. PA March 6, 1808. Dominick and John Mattingly, brothers, came to Garrett Co. A marriage license was issued to Dominick Mattingly at the Court House in Cumberland MD on February 22, 1832. According to the family Bible, Dominick married Ann Browning, daughter of his near neighbor, the famous hunter, Meshack Browning, March 1, 1832. They had four children: Mary F., Anne Celestine, Meshack, and William H. Mattingly. A fifth child, Elizabeth, was born to Dominick and Nancy Mattingly. A sixth child, Dominick, was born to Dominick and Mary Griffith. Dominick built a large log tobacco barn just below the road. It was at the raising of this barn that John Sines was accidentally killed. Like their ancestors in St. Mary's County, the Mattinglys at Sang Run raised on the fertile new fields considerable tobacco. It is possible that a twisted old lilac bush, planted by the Mattinglys, still blooms near the site of Dominick's house. In 1836 the brothers divided their farm and in 1840 John sold his 81 acres to Elijah Friend. When John moved away, Anne Mattingly taught school in his former house. In 1852 Dominick moved to Johnstown, after selling his farm at Sang Run to his adjoining neighbor, John L. Browning, for $1,300. On December 17, 1853, Dominick bought of Catherine Townshend for $2,500 the Singleton Townshend farm at Johnstown, now Hoyes, MD. This property consisted of "Fayette" and four military lots, a total of 386 acres, reserving four small town or building lots, 1-4 acres each heretofore sold--one occupied by Joseph Yoder, another by Meshack Casteel. Dominick was an energetic and prosperous farmer, as were almost all of the Mattingly family, and a Democrat in politics. Dominick Mattingly died at Hoyes May 27, 1854. Dominick's son, Meshack Mattingly, took over management of the home farm and eventually purchased the interests of the other heirs, making it one of the best stock farms in Garrett County. He also served one term as County Commissioner. About 1850, Meshack Browning, Dominick Mattingly and William Browning were selected to collect donations to build a church at Johnstown. The result of their labors was St. James Church, dedicated in 1853 under the passtorate of Rev. Wm. Lambert. It was for many years very prosperous. In 1890, the present church was built under the pastorate of Rev. Romanus Mattingly. The name was at the same time changed from St. James to St. Dominic, the patron Saint of Dominick Mattingly, who was a zealous Catholic; so was his wife, Anne Browning. The church is located on the road opposite the Mattingly homestead, and the cemetery adjoining contains the graves of Meshack Browning, D. J. Mattingly, and many of their families.
