She graduated from Nelson High School in 1938. Following her graduation, she qualified for her teaching certificate and began teaching school. She taught in several rural schools in the Nelson, area. Read More	Doris J. (Statz) Hattan was born December 26, 1919, in Nuckolls County, Nebraska to Hazel J. and William T. Statz and died April 24, 2006 at the age of 86 years, 3 months, 29 days. She graduated from Nelson High School in 1938. Following her graduation, she qualified for her teaching certificate and began teaching school. She taught in several rural schools in the Nelson, area. On March 16, 1944, she married Wilbur D. Hattan. She made her home, family and church her career. The term Homemaker aptly applied to her. She kept a clean, well organized home and practiced recycling and lived the philosophy of more with less before either were popular. Growing a garden, cooking and canning were skills in which she excelled. Pickles of all varieties were her specialty and family favorite. She took pleasure in sharing produce from her garden and kitchen with family and friends. Growing flowers, especially roses, was a favorite pastime. She enjoyed displaying her roses on the dining room table and at church functions. She was the kind of Mother who was at home when the kids got home from school and who had dinner on the table shortly after Wilbur came in from work. She took pride in sewing and in making sure her daughters knew how to cook and sew. She was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since her Baptism in the Blue River at age 13. For many years she served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Teacher for children where she planned diligently for their Christian nurture through Bible stories, music and experiences. She served as Chair of the World Outreach, Christian Education, Evangelism and Membership Committees. She was elected a member of the Diaconate. She actively served through the Christian Women's Fellowship as President and Treasurer; and as Membership, Worship, Study, and Service Chair. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Wilbur; 2 brothers Wendell Statz and Raymund Statz. She is survived by her children: Lura (Richard) Cayton, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Lynelle Yzaguirre, DeSoto, Texaso; Valerie Romberg, Indianapolis, Indiana; David Hattan, Lewisville, Texas; 6 Grandchildren, and 9 Great Grandchildren. 3 Sisters: Elizabeth Woodside, Cozad, Nebraska, Helen Sloan, Bloomfield, IA, Irene (Kay) Hafen, Scottsdale, AZ; and brother William Statz, Nelson, NE. and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 28, 2006 at 10:00 AM from the Faith Christian Church in Omaha, Nebraska with Pastor Doug Pfeiffer officiating. Music was "Because He Lives", "My God and I", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Nearer My God to Thee", with Helen Sloan as soloist and Ross Andrews as organist. Pallbearers were Manuel Yzaguirre, Richard Cayton, David Romberg, John Baker, John Lillie and Dwain Acker. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska, Memorials to Faith Christian Church or Uta Halee Girls Village.
