Sylten (April 29, 1916 - October 2, 2009) Dorothy Sylten, died Friday, October 2, 2009, at the Lighthouse Guesthouse in Hiawatha at the age of 93. She was born in White Cloud, KS, on April 29, 1916, the daughter of Charles (Bud) and Maurine Collins Lear. She grew up in Highland and graduated from high school there in 1934. Shortly after that the family moved to Hiawatha where Dorothy spent most of the remaining years of her life. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Hiawatha. Dorothy was married to Paul Werner on January 24, 1935. Together they had one son, Gary, and a baby daughter who died at birth. Paul died on November 4, 1964. Dorothy married Roy Pruitt on April 9, 1966. He died on July 19, 1972. She was married to Thoralf (Tuffy) Sylten on August 2, 1975, and they enjoyed their life together until he passed away on December 17, 1999. In addition to her husbands, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her son Gary Werner in 1970, her sister Eloise Foster, and her brother Nelson Lear. Survivors include her brother Bill Lear and his wife Corky of Hiawatha, her step-daughter Sara Miller, her daughter-in-law Nancy Koller, two granddaughters, two step grandsons, four great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, numerous nieces and nephews including her niece Debbie Wilson of Hiawatha. Dorothy will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by her family and friends. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church of Hiawatha or to a charity of the donor's choice. They may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
