BENNETT HELPED IN DEVELOPMENT OF SHERMAN COUNTY FOR PAST FIFTY-THREE YEARS The sad news of the death of Dr. A. M. Bennett, one of Loup City's prominent and respected citizens, last Thursday evening about six o'clock came as a great shock to all who knew him. Arthur M. Bennett was born in Gratiot County, Michigan, December 7th, 1859, and passed from this life at his home in Loup City, Nebraska, April 17th, 1930 at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 10 days. His parents were true pioneers, for taking the family in the spring of 1874 they came to the West, which was then a rugged frontier, and settled at Kearney, Nebraska. Locating in the Pleasant Valley, northwest of Kearney, a crop was planted but the plague of grasshoppers destroyed everything that year. Courageously another crop was planted the next spring, which again the grasshoppers destroyed. Undaunted the third year a crop was planted, and the third time, like a sinister plague, the grasshoppers swarmed down upon the fields leaving desolation in their wake. The family then removed farther west, settling in Oregon. Arthur, then a youth of seventeen, had not lost faith in Nebraska, so he decided to remain and cast his lot with the pioneers of this great state. While in Kearney as an adolescent youth, he fell under the influence of the Reverend and Mrs. Asbury Collins, affectionately known as "Father and Mother Collins." He also learned to know and revere "Uncle Bob" French. He removed to Loup City in the autumn of 1881 and when Father Collins came here in 1883 to organize and build the Methodist Church, he found Arthur permanently located here. Becoming acquainted with Miss Rebecca Chase, a member of a highly respected pioneer family, and after a courtship, he was united with her in marriage January 28th, 1884. Two children were born to this union: Mrs. Blanche M. Cording of Litchfield, Neb., and Charles A. Bennett who died six years ago in Yakima, Wash., leaving a son, Charles Jr., and a daughter, Betty Lou, who have been making their home with their paternal grandparents. Dr. Bennett's health failed more than a year ago and some months spent at Hot Springs, Ark., were beneficial, but he never fully recovered from his ailment. His last illness was of a week's duration and nothing could be done to restore him to health. Thursday evening as the first shadows of twilight began to appear, his spirit quietly slipped away from his tired, pain-racked body, returned to the God who gave it. He united with the Methodist Church November 30th, 1924 on confession of faith, having previously been a regular attendant and a man of irreproachable character. Always faithful and devoted to the cause of Christ and the church, he served in various positions of honor and trust, and was a member of the board of stewards and president of the board of trustees at the time of his death. He was a loyal member of the Masonic order, uniting with Port Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in 1883, with Joppa Chapter, Royal Arch Masons in 1890, and with the Oriental Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, in 1903. He was a member of the City Council, never sparing himself when his city needed his services as councilman, having been re-elected only a fortnight before his death. For half a century this community has felt the influence of Dr. Bennett, who has always stood on the side of right as he saw it. His influence will long be felt, and his kindly personality will always be held in remembrance by those who knew him. Surviving are his wife, daughter, Mrs. Cording, five grandchildren and three brothers, David A., DeWitt, Mich.; Joseph H., Carnation, Wash.; and Homer T., of Warren, Oregon, who with his son made the long journey to pay his last respects to his departed brother. After a brief service in the home, the funeral service was conducted in the Methodist Church Monday afternoon, Rev. W.C. Birmingham officiating. A mixed quartet consisting of Mrs. Robt. Jewett, Mrs. Romeo Conger, Lawrence N. Smith and John W. Long sang two numbers. Mr. Albert Johnson sang, "Face to Face" by special request. Both the Eastern Star and the Masonic lodges were present in a body at the church. The Masonic lodge had charge of the ceremony at the grave. Mayor Bowman issued a proclamation asking that business be suspended during the hour of the funeral and the businessmen were glad to honor Dr. Bennett in this significant manner. The entire community feels the loss of this departed friend and citizen and sincerely sympathizes with the bereaved relatives.
