OBITUARY McKnight—George Campbell McKnight, son of John P., Mary Elizabeth McKnight, was born at Chenoa, Ill., March 3, 1866. He came to Kansas with his parents in fall of 1870. He passed his boyhood on a farm 3 miles north of Hiawatha. He attended Glenn Academy at Hiawatha, Rush medical college, Chicago, Ill., from which institution he graduated in 1892 with highest honors. Dr. McKnight returned to Hiawatha, entered general practice of medicine, surgery with Dr. Bliss. He was a pioneer doctor of horse, buggy days. The buggy he used is now in state historical museum, Topeka, Kans. He was one of organizers of Brown county medical society, upon retirement from active practice was made an honorary member of the society. He was also company doctor for Union Pacific railroad, for many years was medical director of Life, Annuity association. In civic affairs Dr. McKnight was a leader, serving 6 years as mayor of city of Hiawatha, from 1914-1920. During his term, city memorial auditorium was built. He was for many years president of board of education, treasurer of Brown county fair. During World War I he served as a member of home draft board. In 1895 Dr. McKnight united with the Presbyterian church in Hiawatha by confession of faith in Christ. Thru the years he has served his church faithfully. In 1923 he was ordained an elder, held office until his death. When old church burned, he served as chairman of building committee for the present building, devoting his full time to details of new church. The organ, church building stand as lasting testimonies of his love, devotion. Dr. McKnight was united in marriage to Miss Cora Ellen Knabb on October 9, 1895. Surviving him are his widow, daughter Elda (now Mrs. F. H. Geiler), daughter Joan M. Geiler of Tulsa, Okla.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ida Fouke of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Grace Winter of Topeka; 4 brothers, W. E. McKnight of Sabetha, T. T. McKnight of Auburn, Nebr., C. F. McKnight of Kansas City, Mo., Roscoe McKnight of Pasadena, Calif. 2 brothers, W. S. McKnight of Axtell, John P. McKnight of Hiawatha preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from McKnight home. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Tues Oct 13, 1942.
