Description	:	Dr. Giles C. Moorehead, the first white boy born in Ida County, Iowa, passed away at his home on November 7, 1944, on Moorehead Street. Read More	Dr. Giles C. Moorehead, the first white boy born in Ida County, Iowa, passed away at his home on November 7, 1944, on Moorehead Street. He was 88 years old last Tuesday, being born Nov. 2, 1856. His parents, John and Martha Moorehead, were natives of Zanesville, Ohio. They were among the first settlers in Ida County, Iowa, arriving here June 1856. That summer they built a log cabin in which they resided until the next year when they built a saw mill and dam; and cut the lumber for their home. It was built in 1858 around the log cabin. Dr. Moorehead grew to young manhood on the old home place. He received his first schooling in a school maintained in the home, and later in the first school house built in the county located on the hillside on historic drive, just north of the old King's Mill. At the age of 12, he went to stay with the Woodworth family in Onawa, Iowa, to attend school there. Mrs. Woodworth was his sister, Anna L. Moorehead. When the family moved to Sioux City, he accompanied them, and completed his elementary education in the school of that city. Giles attended an academy in Iowa City, Iowa, and later the State University. He graduated from medical school in 1879. For a time, he stayed at home to care for his father, then an invalid, and remained there until his death. He then entered active practice with Dr. E. C. Heilman, their office being located on the site now occupied by the Ida Grove Oil Co. A few years later, he set up a practice of his own in the building next door which he occupied for nearly 60 years. In 1940, he closed his downtown office, but continued to receive calls at his residence. The doctor was active in medical circles, and for many years served as counselor for the 11th district of the State Medical Society. He was past president of the Ida County Medical Society, and a life member of the American Medical association. He was also interested in Masonic Work and a 32 degree Mason, a member of Commandry Consistery and Abu Bekr Shrine. He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Chapman of Keokuk, Iowa, on June 24, 1886, and their happy married life continued for 58 years. In June, 1936, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home here. The young couple began housekeeping in a residence located where the Babcock residence now stands on Washington Ave. in 1944. Later they purchased a cottage that stood where the Bruce Snell home is now located. In 1895, they moved to the present home at 410 Moorehead Street. Two children were born to the union, Helen (Mrs. L. M. Chenoweth) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Forrest Glover Moorehead, at home. Dr. Moorehead maintained the State Traveling Library in his office which later became the public library. For many years, he contributed articles to the Marshalltown Times. The hobby of writing continued with him and in 1927, he wrote a history of Ida County. He dwelled on the scientific side of the medical profession, and with his reading kept himself modernized in his work. He took post graduate work in Chicago and Rochester, and spent one summer at Harvard University. He was recognized as a diagnostician and reported the second case of Trichinosis known in Iowa, to the State Medical Association.
