Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa. At the old family home in Zanesville, Ohio, he engaged in business where he remained until coming to Iowa. On Oct. 15, 1844, he married Martha C. F. Good at her home in Charleston, W. Va. In 1851, Mr. Moorehead came to Iowa and located near Iowa City, engaged in farm pursuits. After a 5 year residence there, he moved to Ida County and founded the home where the family still lives. Only one family came ahead of him to Ida County, the Ebenezer Comstock family arrived in May 1856, and the Moorehead family arrived in June 1856, the land of wild, unbroken prairie. At first, the family moved into an abandoned trapper's cabin located near the Maple River where the Timber Creek flows into the Maple. At once, they started building a log cabin up the slope a short distance from the trapper's cabin. When her log home was finished, nestled up against the grove, Martha Moorehead named her home "Ida Grove," for the county and the grove. In 1877, when the first railroad came to the new town being built near the tracks, the town was named after the Moorehead home of Ida Grove. Ida County was organized in 1858, and John Moorehead was elected Judge. That title stayed with him all his life. John also held other important offices including the office of County Treasurer. The home of Judge Moorehead was always open to the benighted traveler and its liberal hospitality became known near and far. The home became the first courthouse and the first hospital. The closest house to them was at Storm Lake, Iowa, on one side, and Correctionville, Iowa, on the other. Twice John and his family were driven from their home by maurauding Indians, but he returned undismayed. He saw Ida County change from a vast prairie wilderness to a very garden in productivity. The home of plenty became the church, school house, courthouse in 1860, first postoffice in 1857, and community center where people gathered for weddings and parties. He was always willing to help others. There were many birds flying in the air, lots of fish in the clear, running streams and rivers, and beautiful wild flowers blooming all around. Judge Moorehead had a pet crane who even came into the house at times. Mrs. Moorehead did not like the tall crane snatching food off her shelves in the kitchen. There were numerous prairie chickens everywhere, and were trapped for their meals. During the holiday season of 1878-79, he was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Anna Woodward, living at Shenandoah, Iowa. While there, he was suddenly rendered helpless by a stroke of apoplexy which completely paralized him. For several days he was unable to move a muscle, but at the end of 3 weeks, he had sufficiently recovered to undertake the journey back home. He never fully recovered from his stroke, and gradually failed until he passed away. Survivors are his widow, Martha, daughter Anna Woodward, and 4 sons, Giles, Hammond, Frank, and William. Funeral services were at the house with Rev.
