He was born March 4, 1849, at Zanesville, Ohio, the oldest son of Judge John H. Moorehead and Martha Good Moorehead. William's father was in the mercantile business in Zanesville, Ohio, until 1851 when he migrated to Iowa and located near Iowa City, Iowa. In 1856, the parents moved to Ida County and became its first settlers. William was 7 years old. Judge Moorehead made a first purchase of a tract of 1,000 acres, and later added large pieces until he became one of the big land owners of western Iowa. William made his home on the homestead where he gave his attention to farming and raising stock. He specialized in Shorthorn and Jersey cattle, and poland china hogs. He constantly strove to improve the class of cattle raised in the state. During William's early manhood, he attended the college at Davenport, Iowa. Mr. Moorehead was married July 3, 1882, to Miss May Bassett, daughter of Tom Basset, also born in Zanesville, Ohio. She was removed by death Nov. 22, 1887, leaving one child, a son, Harold, who has since grown to manhood and entered the pracice of medicine at Underwood, Iowa. He is survived by two brothers, H. A. and Giles C. Moorehead. A brother Frank, and a sister Anna Moorehead have died in recent years. Death has removed one of the human landmarks in the history of Ida County. His genial, kindly nature endeared him to the entire community, and made the grove one of the pleasure spots for all the citizens of the town. It was the family picnic grounds, and there are but few in this vicinity who have not enjoyed it and listened to Mr. Moorehead's account of early days. Mr. Moorehead's home was the first permanent house built in Ida County. It was the county seat, the postoffice, the tavern, the community store. Here the traveling ministers held their services and the children of the early settlers were baptized and the occasional funeral held. It was a veritable oasis in the wilderness, being the only house between Sac City and Correctionville, Iowa, and was the refuge for all the early settlers when in danger from Indians. Everyone who knew Mr. Moorehead felt at home in the grove and came to look upon it as their own. Hundreds of our people can recall the old well, where as children, they went for water and always found Mr. Moorehead ready to help them draw a fresh bucket from that deep cool cavern. His stories of how the Indian chiefs were buried in the branches of the old oak trees of the ancient natural grove gave a thrill to every boy and girl who visited Mr. Moorehead.
