Read More	Martha Catherine Forrest Good Moorehead was born July 6, 1814 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and was married to Judge John Henry Moorehead on Oct. 15, 1844, at Charleston, W. Va. She came with her husband to Iowa in the fall of 1851, locating at Iowa City, Iowa, for a few years. In June 1856, they moved to Ida County, Iowa, where she continued to live until she passed away on Dec. 15, 1894. When she moved to Ida County, Iowa, the country was new, not more than two white families being in the county at that time, and amid all the hardships and discouragements of those early days, she met and overcame the hard trials of a pioneer life. Not only did she provide for the comfort and welfare of those around her in the home, but she found time for the training of her children. So elevating and refining was her influence upon her home that it was recognized as a veritable oasis in the great wild stretch of country and prairie around it. Mr. Moorehead was in the employment of the government for awhile, and had duties that called him to Sioux City, so he moved his family there in 1863. They spent a part of a year there, but returned to Ida Grove, Iowa. It was during that brief stay in Sioux City that Mr. Moorehead became well and favorably known to many of the people there. Mrs. Moorehead belonged to a race of people now almost gone, popularly known as the aristocracy of Virginia. The afflicted and unfortunate found in her a friend, and in the times before the advent of railroads into this country, many a stranger and weary storm-bound traveler was given a hearty welcome to the hospitalities of her hearth and home and entertained ungrudgingly for days at a time. The covered wagons followed the Trail of the stagecoaches and would pass between the Moorehead house and the barn stables where the horses were bedded down waiting for the next stagecoach to come along. Two stagecoaches arrived each noon, one from the east and one from the west. There at the Moorehead home, they exchanged the government mail they were transporting between Fort Dodge and Sioux City, Iowa. The passengers were fed at the home on a long table that seated 16. Of all the members at the home, one only remains at the old place, Wm. C. Moorehead, the eldest son, who inherits the homestead. Her only daughter, Anna L., is the wife of Rev. Dr. Woodworth, of the Methodist Episcopal Church; Hammond A. is located in Tennessee; Frank R. and Giles C. Moorehead are both residents of Ida Grove, the latter being one of our successful practicing physicians. The funeral services were conducted at her late residence by Rev. Peter Fox, of the Episcopal Church of Sac City, Iowa, assisted by Rev. Gleason of Ida Grove, Iowa. ------ Martha C.
