He was an Ida County Surveyor and a City Engineer. His death took place at 7:30 p.m. Monday Nov. 14, 1932. The funeral were held at the home of his brother, Dr. Giles C. Moorehead. The services were conducted by Rev. G. W. Dunn. Hammond A. Moorehead was born at Iowa City, Iowa, Jan. 14, 1852. He came to Ida County, Iowa, with his parents, the late Judge John and Martha Moorehead, on June 20, 1856. They were a pioneer family, and the history and founding, later growth, of Ida Grove is intimately connected with the Judge and his descendants. "Ham," as he was most frequently called, attended school in "the little school house above the mill," and later, when still a boy, he was sent to school at Zanesville, Ohio, the old family home. Later he studied civil engineering at State University of Iowa and in 1872, assisted Thad S. Snell and George McWilliams in surveying a railroad line fromn Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Onawa, Iowa. In 1875, he attended business college at Keokuk, Iowa. He served many terms as Ida County Surveyor, and when the town of Ida Grove was platted in 1877 at the advent of the railroad, he purchased the lot now occupied by Mrs. Jennie Bailey residence, and built the first house on the south side of the railroad tracks in the new town. --------- In 1884, he moved upon the farm now owned by B. S. Russell. He broke the prairie sod, erected the buildings, and farmed here several years. In 1887, he moved to Cleveland, Tn. and engaged in the tobacco trade. In 1896, the family returned to Ida Grove, Iowa, and after the death of his wife in 1924, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Anna Goodrich. He conducted an insurance office, and was active in business up to the time of his death. Mr. Moorehead's marriage to Jennie H. Chapman was on May 10, 1877, at Keokuk, Iowa. To them were born 3 children, John who died in 1907, James Edward, and Anna Goodrich of Ida Grove. There were 9 surviving grandchildren and the one brother, Dr. Giles C. Moorehead. Jennie, his wife, passed away Feb. 14, 1924. The early history of Ida County has been from Ham, more than any other person. His boyhood memories recalled the joys, hardships, and dangers of the early pioneers. He remembered the first log house with its portholes, the Indian scares, the organization of Ida County, the early church evangelists, the first school, the breaking of the prairie, the coming of the grasshoppers, and prairie fires, the call of sickness, and the burial of the dead. At times, when the only pioneer cemetery was on top of the high hill just west of the Judge Moorehead Home, (a.k.a. Stagecoach Inn), the Eulogy would be read at the Stagecoach Platform rock steps, and the body carried up that steep hill by men to the pioneer cemetery. As a surveyor, he was almost intuitive in his knowledge. The construction of a sod mound, left by the first surveyors, yielded to him its secrets and told of township and ranges that enabled persons lost in storms or darkness to get their bearings. As a surveyor, he trusted his "needle," as a business man, he did not betray the confidence of others, and as a friend he was ever loyal. Mr. Moorehead became a member of the Methodist Church of Ida Grove on Dec. 10, 1876, and his life was an exemplification of the best that religion gives. ---------- May 17,1877 Pioneer: Married-Moorehead-Chapman: At the residence of the bride's parents, Thursday evening May 10,1877 by Rev. Simmons, Mr. H.A. Moorehead and Miss Jennie H. Chapman, of this city. The residence of Mr. J.M. Chapman, between seventh and eighth on Des Moines, was the scene of a large wedding, Thursday evening, the parties being Mr. H.A. Moorehead and Miss Jennie H. Chapman. The groom is to be congratulated on securing one of Keokuk's fairest daughters for a partner through life, and the young couple were deserving of the many congratulations they received from their numerous friends on the occasion of their marriage. They will take up their residence in Ida, for which city they will take their departure on Monday morning. ---- Hammond A.
