JOY JAMES CHAUZA Joy Chauza, the son of James and Blanche Chauza, was born July 21, 1918 at DuBois, Nebr., and passed away suddenly of a heart attack at Davenport, Ia., Oct. 29, 1969. His early life was spent on the farm two miles southwest of DuBois, where he attended grade school at East Star School and DuBois High School, and was a member of the band. Always a hard worker, his interests were many and diversified. Joy spent two years in the Army which was mostly spent in Frankfurt and Brenan, where he was in the Military band, and a X Ray technician in a hospital. He received his discharge in 1947 with the rank of T. Sgt. Returning to DuBois he owned and operated the Chauza Feed Store until he left for the Palmer College of Chiropractic. He graduated in 1954 and practiced in both Iowa and Illinois, later specializing in Reflexology. The last two years he was employed at the J.C. Penny Store in Davenport. Although not feeling well he continued his work. He was very active in his church in Davenport and a Priest of the Davenport Ward. He leaves to mourn his death: two brothers, Glenn of DuBois and Arnold of Cape Coral, Fla.; and a sister, Adella Bryant of Phoenix, Ariz.; besides 12 nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. His father preceded him in death in 1960 and his mother in October of 1968. Funeral services were held in Pawnee City at the Wherry Mortuary Sunday, Nov. 2, 1969 with the Rev. N.E. Hamilton officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Byford Metzger and Mrs. John Wherry with Mrs. Ross Thiemann at the organ. Pallbearers were Donald Hayward, Max Church, Lyle Korber, Lumir Rakosnik, Milan Rakosnik and Lloyd Popelka. Mrs. Leo Haight and Mrs. Donald Hayward were in charge of flowers. Interment was in the DuBois cemetery with military honors by the Legion Post. (Obit from the Pawnee Republican.) "Uncle Joy" is fondly remembered by all his nephews and nieces, we never got to see him often, but he had a such a great sense of humor that he always made us laugh. When he had the feed store in DuBois he'd take two of us at a time for an adventure around town. On Chuck and my turn he took us into the pool hall, he had us sit on a bench where he gave us each a bottle of orange pop while he visited with his friends. Although I didn't care for the smell of the cigar smoke, that was the best pop I ever drank! He'd tell us something in Bohemian knowing full well we never knew what it was, all of us would laugh hysterically when he'd say "suckazamitzki", it sounds like a cuss word and maybe it was! He loved music and played the accordion beautifully. He was small in stature, but he left a big impression!
