James Chauza,Jr. was born November 2, 1881 in the vllage of Netchovice, Czechoslavakia and passed away at the Hillcrest Nursing Home at Plattsmouth, Nebraska July 9, 1960 where he had been the past seven months and seven days. He came to America with his parents and two sisters at the age of seven years, living at Table Rock for a few years. The rest of his life was spent near DuBois. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death. On October 16, 1907 he was married to Blanche Yoble. Four children were born to this union. He was a kind loving husband, father and grandfather, and was especially fond of his great grandsons. As a retired farmer he still loved the farm and his livestock. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and four children, Glenn and Arnold of DuBois, Mrs. Adella Bryant of Phoenix, AZ and Dr. Joy Chauza of Davenport, IA. Two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at Wherry Mortuary in Pawnee City, Nebraska on Tuesday July 12,, at 2 pm, with Rev. Carl Stein of Table Rock officiating. Pall bearers were Edward Chauza, Roger Chauza, Albert Chauza, Charles Chauza, Melvin Chauza and Roy Chauza. Interment was in the DuBois Cemetery. Grandpa was a great blacksmith and inventor, he was always making something to ease the labor on the farm. He never got patents for anything, but he made a "pig catcher" that worked great, improved many of the farm implements so they worked better, and made the first front end scoop on a tractor. He was of small stature so needed all the help he could get. I wish I could of recorded his stories about the "old country", after giving us a lemon drop or peppermint candy, we all sat around his day bed and listened intently as he told about the hardships over there. How in the winter they were only allowed a small amount of wood to heat with. So the family went out at night in the wagon, they would go into the woods and cut a tree, taking every chip the axe left and putting them in his mother's apron. With ever bit of wood loaded they would cover the spot with moss so you couldn't tell there was ever a tree there. His father was a master carpenter, but they must have had some farm animals. He told of grazing the cows and geese along the road sides, which were planted to fruit trees. They must have been cold and hungry a lot, always fearful they were going to get arrested for some minor thing, like getting the wood to keep warm or eating any of the fruit. He was a frail man and believed in the hot springs to heal your body, so he went to Missouri to bathe in the healing waters. With the help of his family he was a very successful farmer. He was known for his mean streak in his younger days, but the grandchildren never saw that part of his life and were able to enjoy their time with him.
