Votaw, age 80, of 31154 Winona Road, Salem, Ohio died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Community Hospital ER. He was born May 13, 1926, in Butler Township, the son of the late Clarence M. and Lucille (King) Votaw. Mr. Votaw was a rural letter carrier for the Hanoverton Post Office for 10 years. Previously he worked for the Salem Post Office as a rural letter carrier for 23 years. After his retirement in 1981, he did carpentry work. He was a member of the Winona United Methodist Church, a former trustee and usher at the church for several years, a member of the rural carriers, a 1944 graduate of Salem High School and member of Salem Square Wheels. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Lati and served in the Occupational Theatre in Japan for two years. Survivors include his wife, H. Virginia (Zimmerman) Votaw, whom he married Nov. 27, 1949; three sons, David Gilbert Votaw of Salem, Dwight M. Votaw of Sanford, Florida and James M. (wife, Tammy) Votaw of Wrens, Ga.; a daughter, Debra Cehrs of Salem; two brothers, C.L. "Shorty" (wife, Marty) Votaw of Salem and Dean (wife, Darlene) Votaw, both of Leetonia; six sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Coffee of Winona, Mrs. (Leta) Faye Wright of Mansfield, Mrs. William (Ruth) Zimmerman of Cuyahoga Falls, Mrs. Jack (Ila) Meier of Salem, Mrs. Roger (Karen) Zeigler of Salem and Mrs. John (Audrey) Firth of Salem; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Alfreda Zimmerman. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Stark Memorial with the Rev. James Pfander officiating. Burial will be in Historic Hope Cemetery. Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Stark Memorial. The Salem VFW Post 892 and AMVETS Post 45 Burial Group will accord full military honors at the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Praise Team of the Church, 32114 Winona Road, Salem, Ohio 44460.
