Gould, the some of Samuel and Mary Livingston-Gould was born in franklin Co., Ohio, November 1, 1831. He spent his childhood near his birthplace. With his parents he came to Lick Creek township, Van Buren Co., Iowa, in 1846. At this time the country was new, and he, with his parents, experienced the hardships and privations of pioneer life. Under such surroundings, he grew to manhood. He took advantage of the limited educational opportunities that the time afforded. On Dec. 1, 1859 he was united in the bonds of holy matrimony with Miss Rebecca Brownfield of Utica, Iowa. This union was blessed with ten children; three of which died in infancy. Ruth, Orpha and Emma departed this life after they had reached womanhood. The children who survive their father are as follows: Mrs. Agnes Carson of Birmingham, Mrs. Cora Findlay of Kansas City, Mo., John of Conway Springs, Kansas, and Robert S., also of Birmingham. Eight grandchildren also survive him, besides one sister and his life's companion. Mr. Gould's chosen occupation was that of farming, in which vocation he was successful, living on the same place for fifty-two years. Politically, he was a strong antislavery advocate before the war, and his services were often called into requisition in transporting passengers on the Underground Railroad, and although only a youth, he felt that he had a part to play in "Setting the Captive Free." He was a warm friend of Prohibition as a party movement. He manifested a commendable interest in all enterprises that helped in the upbuilding of the community and promoted the general welfare. Religiously he was a Presbyterian. Having confessed Christ as his personal savior, he united with this congregation, of which he remained a faithful and consistent member. Mr. Gould was in failing health during the winter, but his last illness lasted about ten weeks, during which time he suffered intensely, and death relieved him June 27th, 1915, at ripe old age of 83 years, 7 months and 26 days. The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Rev. Bock conducted the service, which was attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbors.
