Description	:	Edward D Coy was born in 1863 in Iowa to Sarah Jane Steele and William G Coy, age 45, who were married September 19, 1839, in Xenia, Ohio. Read More	Edward D Coy was born in 1863 in Iowa to Sarah Jane Steele and William G Coy, age 45, who were married September 19, 1839, in Xenia, Ohio. Edward was the youngest of 11 children born in a span of 26 years. When the Gold Rush hit in California, his adventurous older brothers ventured West on their own and struck gold. By 1880 the older siblings were settling in and doing well in California, from San Jose to Salinas, they began marrying and having children of their own. Edward, or Ed Coy as most knew him, moved out west to Salinas around 1886. He was an active member of the community, being reported at many social events. Ed was a member of the local gun club, along with his brother Frank. They participated in many competitions, with Frank proving to be the expert In marksmanship. At this time, brothers Frank (John Franklin), Andy (Andrew), Ed (Edward), and Darwin, were all living in the same vicinity. According to the newspaper, “Salinas Weekly Index”, Darwin and his wife Hattie welcomed a baby girl on May 24, 1894. That same week Darwin Coy sold the “Grande Saloon” in Salinas to W.O. HARLAN and George A. WHITE for $3,000. Darwin and his brothers continued to operate the “Coy Bros Livery Stable” in San Jose. On September 14, 1894 Edward told friends he was going to San Jose for a vacation, that would be the last time anyone would see him alive. Edward left Salinas and made it halfway to Castroville, when for some reason he decided his life was not worth living. He took out a pencil and piece of paper and scribbled the following words: “I am tired of living. I think that a man lives like I do is better off dead. I have the best mother in the world. Good-bye. I have got in the habit of drinking and would rather kill myself than disgrace them that care for me.” He then apparently shot himself twice. The coroner testified “one bullet entered above the left nipple, passed through the lung and came out on the left side near the backbone. Another ball entered below the jawbone on the left side and passing through the neck came out on the right side below the jawbone”, was how it was reported in “Monterey Cypress”, a weekly newspaper, on September 29, 1894. His body was not found until September 24, 1894, upon which hearing the news shocked the community. After a coroner’s inquest was completed that week, Edward was laid to rest at 3 o’clock afternoon on September 25, 1894. A long line of sympathizing friends followed the remains to the cemetery, the Salinas band preceding the cortege playing a funeral dirge. Edward was buried in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, the funeral being under the auspices of Court Santa Lucia, No. 8125, A.O.F. of A., and the Salinas fire department. Edward Coy was single without children when he died. He left behind three brothers in Salinas, Darwin Coy, Frank Coy, and Andy Coy, along with parents Sarah Jane and William G Coy.
