Hitchcock, one of the well known and substantial ranchers and landowners of the Salinas neighborhood in Monterey county, has developed a good business on his place there and is carrying on his operations in approved modern fashion. Mr. Hitchcock was born in Monterey county, August 9, 1867, and is a son of Benjamin and Agnes (Abbott) Hitchcock, pioneers of California, whose last days were spent at Salinas. Benjamin Hitchcock came to California in the year 1855 and was for some time thereafter engaged in mining in the vicinity of Nevada City. He later became engaged in dairying in Sonoma and Marin counties and in 1865 came to Salinas. In the immediate vicinity of that city he bought a tract of two hundred acres in 1872 and thereon established his home, he and his wife there spending the remainder of their lives, well known and influential pioneers of that community. Benjamin Hitchcock died April 8, 1909, and his widow survived him for almost eight years, her death occurring April 6, 1917. Of the children born to this pioneer couple two survive, the subject of this sketch having a sister, Donna, wife of George Dougherty of Berkeley. E. E. Hitchcock was five years of age when his parents established their home on the ranch in the immediate vicinity of Salinas and there he was reared, finishing his education in the Salinas high school. From the days of his boyhood he was an able assistant to his father in the labors of the home farm and in due time took over the management of that place. He has ever since been actively engaged in farming there, giving particular attention to the cultivation of vegetables, making a specialty of beans and sugar beets and is doing well in his operations. Mr. Hitchcock is the owner of a well improved ranch of one hundred acres and he and his family are very comfortably and very pleasantly situated there. Mr. Hitchcock's interests are not wholly confined to farming for he is a member of the directorate of the Monterey County Bank. He has ever taken an earnest interest in local civic affairs and for eight or nine years, from 1915 to 1924, served as a member of the Salinas Union high school board, being in office during the time the handsome new Salinas high school was erected, the finest school building in Monterey county. His father was a Royal Arch Mason and he also is affiliated with that ancient order, a member of the blue lodge at Salinas. He also belongs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks at that place. In November, 1901, at Salinas E. E. Hitchcock was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Hitchcock, daughter of Horace H. Hitchcock, and to this union three sons have been born, namely, Darold M., born on May 7, 1904; Elba Leroy, October 20, 1906, and Elmer G., August 11, 1908. Darold Hitchcock is now a student in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at San Francisco; Leroy is attending the University of California, specializing there in optometry, and Elmer Hitchcock is a student in the Salinas high school.
