Read More	ALTON EMPIRE, Thursday, February 27, 1913: J. E. Boland James Elmer Boland was born June 30, 1871, near Williamsburg, Iowa County, Iowa, and died at his home near Alton, Kansas, on Feb. 22, 1913 at the age of 41 years, 7 months and 22 days. The deceased for many years was afflicted with heart trouble, which cause his death. He came to Alton, Kansas, about thirty years ago, and at the age of twelve years, with his father and brothers, began the struggle for a home in the new and undeveloped portion of Kansas, near Alton. He encountered the hardships and trials incident thereto, such as only the old settlers with limited means, can understand. He has been partially rewarded for his labors by seeing the country develop and prosper, and has also made and established his own home, even beyond his own expectations. While his efforts perhaps, cost him his health and brought about an early death, he wished his friends to know that while he was giving up his home on earth, he was gaining one better on the other side. He was united in marriage to Lillian Cox, May 12th, 1895, and to this union were born six children, five boys and one girl, all of whom survive the father. With these, he leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, father, mother, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at the home, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S. H. Gray, pastor of the Congregational church, who made fitting remarks, after which the choir sang, "In the Shadow of His Wing There is Rest Sweet Rest." A large number of friends and neighbors conducted the remains, amid many and beautiful floral offerings, to the Alton cemetery, where he was laid to rest.
