Elmer Elery Ortman was born on Feb. 27, 1926 near Dolton, S.D., to Henry C. and Adina Ortman. He grew up on the family farm and attended school at Dolton. Although his high school was interrupted to help on the family farm, education was very important to Elmer. He later completed his education in Mitchell, S.D., with a vocational degree in electronics. Elmer was raised in a Christian home, and accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age. He deeply desired to instill biblical values to his children and grandchildren. On Aug. 13, 1950 he was united in marriage to Loraine Laura Fast at the Silver Lake MB church near Dolton. Three daughters were born to this union. They farmed near Dolton on the same land that his grandfather homesteaded. The farm was a place where the extended family would gather. Elmer faithfully attended Silver Lake MB Church and helped where he could, serving as church treasurer and teaching Sunday school for many years. Elmer suffered a major stroke in Nov. 1999 at which time they moved to Sioux Falls. Due to Elmer's determination and perseverance he regained a great deal of independence for a number of years following his stroke. Through all the difficult times in the past nine years, Elmer's faith remained strong and he continued to read his Bible daily up until the last days in the hospital. He attended Lincoln Hills MB Church whenever his health allowed. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Loraine; three daughters: Margaret (Bill) Loewen, Sioux Falls, Marilyn (Dan) Christmore, Wichita, Kan., and Shirley (John) Luce, Sparks, Nev.; seven grandchildren: Karissa (Carl), Kimberly, Eric, Corbin, Sarah, Jared and Timothy; and a great-grandson, Emory; a brother Vernon (Darleen) Ortman, Sioux Falls; and a sister Glenys Ortman, Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Leslie; and two half-brothers, Alvin and Marvin.
