Read More	July 16, 1908 Indianola Herald Among the many old-time friends which have passed to the other life during the past few years in this county none have been more valued or respected by us than was Mrs. Fred Alexander, who died at her home near Prole, Wednesday of last week, July 8, 1908. Her passing brings vividly to mind the days when together as children we attended school in the little brick school house in the village of Greenbush. Elzira Bedwell when a girl never lacked friends, for she was of an amiable and sweet disposition and characteristics which followed her through life causing her to be loved by all with whom she had to do. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Bedwell were among the early pioneers of this county, settling on a farm near where Spring Hill now stands. There was quite a large family and her mother especially was famed far and near for her hospitality and kindness of heart, qualities inherited by her daughter Elzira. At the Bedwell home the latch string hung outside and we can say from personal knowledge that the hungry boy was never neglected or turned from her door empty. The excellent traits of character of this kind hearted and to us noble woman of those early days became a part of the life of Mrs. Alexander bringing them down to the present in her person and acts. She was the mother of a large family of children, each of whom can now more than ever appreciate what she was to them. She was a model wife, loving her husband, children and home more than all else. Quiet, unobtrusive, kind to all, she lived and rounded out her years of life serving well her generation. Mr. Alexander was to her a loving husband and the sympathy of his many friends go out to him to the fullest in this his day of greatest sorrow and irreparable loss. She was a good, Christian woman and her family may rest assured that her reward is ample and that she rest from her labors and her works do follow. A letter from her pastor, Rev. A.T. Fitts of Prole gives her leading characteristics very concisely and truthfully when he says: "As her pastor I can conscientiously say that she lived an exemplary Christian life, being one of my most faithful members. Her chief concern was ever in regard to the welfare of others. In times of sickness, she was always ready to offer her services, and the people of the community all regarded her almost as a mother and fondly called her and her husband, Grandma and Grandpa. She has left an imperishable monument in this community and many whose lives she has made brighter will rise up in the great day and call her blessed. The Church will miss her, I will miss her, the entire community will miss her." The funeral services were conducted in Linn Grove M.E. Church by myself assisted by Rev. M.R. Harned, pastor, of that church, in the presence of a large audience. Elzira Bedwell was born Oct. 13, 1843, in Nodaway County, Mo. She moved to Warren County, Iowa, in 1845. She lived with her parents until 1863, when she was married to W.F. Alexander of Warren County. She was baptized into the Baptist Church at Spring Hill in March, 1873, and in December, 1904, having received a letter from that congregation she united with the Church of Christ at Prole, where she remained an active and faithful member until the day of her death, on July 8, 1908. at the age of 64 years, 8 months and 25 days. Eleven children were born to her, all except one of whom are still living, a son Elijah, died when he was 19 years and 5 days old. All the children came to see her during her recent ten weeks' illness, but three were away when she died. These are B.B. Alexander of Hepler, Kan.; Mrs. Nicy Stephens, of Walnut, Kan; and Mrs. Euphemia Peverly of Kimball, Neb. Everett S. Alexander of Axtell, Kan., was present at her death. The family extends cordial thanks to all those who contributed in any way in the labors incident to her sickness, death and burial. # # # Thurs., July 16, 1908 Indianola Herald Prole - The death of Mrs. Alexander last week has taken another early pioneer from this vicinity. She will be very much missed as a friend, neighbor and a worker in the church. The writer has known her from young girlhood to the time of her death. The funeral was held at the M.E. church at this place.
