Ernest was raised on the family farm and lost his father at the age of 10, soon after which the older boys went to work to help their mother support the family. Ernest married Cordie Odesse Cumpston on June 1, 1919, in Lewis County, West Virginia. He became employed in the thriving local oil and gas business, and he eventually assumed ownership of the family farm after buying out the interests of other family members. His mother, Tabitha Casey, continued to live on the farm along with Ernest's sister, Annie Casey, for many years. The family attended the local Methodist Church. Obituary: Salem, West Virginia Ernest F. Casey, 69, of Rt. 3, Salem, died at 1 P.M. Thursday at his home. He was born at Miletus, Doddridge County, June 30, 1895, a son of the late John and Tabitha Flint Casey. On June 1, 1919, he married Bessie Cumpston, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, E.L. Casey of Rt. 3, Salem, W. Robert Casey and John E. Casey, both of Salem; two daughters, Mrs. Clebert (Helen) Dodd of Pine Grove, Mrs. Walter (Hester) Underwood of Salem; four brothers, Rev. N.L. Casey, John M. Casey, Guy S. Casey and James E. Casey, all of Salem; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Steele of Copen, Mrs. Grace Bise of Clarksburg and Mrs. Iva Flanigan of Salem; 10 grandchildren. One sister, Anna M. Casey, preceded him in death. Mr. Casey was a retired employe of the Hope Natural Gas Company. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church and was a Sunday School Superintendent and former Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of K of P Lodge No. 56 at Salem and the Retired Men's Club of Salem. Personal Recollection: Virginia Lee (Casey) Gleason fondly recalls visiting the home of her Uncle Ernest and Aunt Dessie near Salem, WV. She remembers her Uncle Ernest as a jolly fellow who drove a Model T Ford, at a time when any personal car was (to her family) an unaffordable luxury. On one visit, her uncle allowed his teenage daughter to drive Virginia and her brothers and other cousins into Salem in the Model T, which Virginia remembers as a wild and very fun ride.
