Description	:	John Meredith Casey, born in 1856 in Harrison County, West Virginia, was the oldest child of Michael Casey and Margaret (McKeown) Casey. Michael Casey had immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1841 and had been lured to western Virginia to work for the Northwestern Virginia Railroad, while Margaret Casey was a native of Harrison County, Virginia. Michael Casey had immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1841 and had been lured to western Virginia to work for the Northwestern Virginia Railroad, while Margaret Casey was a native of Harrison County, Virginia. John's parents had married in Harrison County in 1855. By the time of John Meredith Casey's birth, his father had become a farmer in Harrison County. Family lore indicated that Michael Casey had been injured working on the Brandy Gap Tunnel in the Tenmile District of Harrison County, and could then no longer work for the railroad, so he had settled in the final area where he had done railroad work. When the 1870 Census was taken, Michael Casey owned his farm, and son John was attending school. Ten years later in 1880, John was 23 years old, still living on his father's farm, and he worked at "huxtering and selling dry goods." On July 7, 1881, John Meredith Casey married Tabitha Rosella Flint (1863-1943), the daughter of Amaziah Flint and Mary (Fitz Randolph) Flint of New Milton, Harrison County, West Virginia. The couple settled in Zinnia, Doddridge County, West Virginia, where John sold goods from his country store and served as the town's postmaster. In the 1900 Census, the family was living on a rented farm in Greenbrier District, Doddridge County, and John listed his profession as "farmer" while his wife indicated that she worked a merchant. John and Tabitha had nine children: Mary Margaret (1882-1974) Anna Myrtle (1884-1959) Nathan Lee (1887-1971) John Meredith (1890-1969) Guy Fillmore (1892-1973) Ernest Franklin (1895-1964) Gracie Mae (1898-1981) James Edward (1901-1973) Ivy Blanche (1905-1999) John Meredith Casey passed away at his home in Zinnia on January 10, 1905, and his death was attributed to rheumatism. He was buried in the Greenbrier Seventh-Day Baptist Cemetery near his home. At the time of his death his youngest child, Ivy Blanche Casey, was only eight days old. Although the farm John left behind helped to feed his family, Tabitha Casey still struggled to care for and provide the necessities for their children. As they were able, the older children each worked and contributed to the family's welfare for many years. Tabitha Casey never remarried. When Tabitha passed away in 1943, John's remains were disinterred and reburied beside her at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Doddridge County, West Virginia. amg
