In 1945 Gene married Catherine Ethel Anvik before leaving for Japan with the US Army occupation forces. After his discharge from the army Gene and Kay bought a farm north of Centralia affectionately known amongst the family as "Skunk Hollow" where they raised 9 children. He was born February 15, 1927 to Archie & Leta (Aplin) Schilt in Centralia and attended Centralia schools. In 1945 Gene married Catherine Ethel Anvik before leaving for Japan with the US Army occupation forces. After his discharge from the army Gene and Kay bought a farm north of Centralia affectionately known amongst the family as "Skunk Hollow" where they raised 9 children. In 1971 Gene and Kay divorced and in 1973 Gene married Geraldine (Hadley) Diacon and built a home in Tenino. Gene worked at the Pacific Power Plant, Charlet's Furniture, Moduline Industries and Domsea Fish Farms. In his spare time Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, rock collecting and bird watching. He loved all critters and always kept animals such as fish, dogs, birds, cows, horses, mules, goats, ducks, geese, pigs, chipmunks, raccoons, turtles, skunks and even two bear cubs. He loved carpentry, having built and remodeled several homes during his lifetime. His first project was the "Little House" built in his parent's back yard when he was only in 8th grade. His animals enjoyed the benefit of this also. He built unique little pens, shelters, and barns for each of them. He built everything from small squirrel cages to big barns. Gene found great joy in gardening. He planted orchards wherever he lived as well as flowers and vegetables. Over the last summer he was able to raise tomatoes, broccoli, and petunias which made him very happy. Animals, carpentry, and gardening are all interests he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
