Read More	Florence Alwine Marie Matt was born 7 Feb 1905 in Farmersburg Twp., Clayton Co., Iowa, the first of four children that would be born to Theodore and Etta (Gossmann) Matt. A little brother, Jason, came along when she was four and a half, and a little sister, Lillian Cesara, when she was ten. Unfortunately, Florence experienced the death of her brother from pneumonia when he was age seven. Tragically, Florence herself fell victim to pneumonia when she was fifteen years old—after only being ill for two days! The following two articles were kept by Lillian (Matt) Thiese in a notebook where she preserved newspaper articles on weddings, births, and deaths. The identity of the newspaper(s) is unknown at this time. High School Girl Dies Miss Florence Matt a member of the freshman class of the Elkader High School died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Matt, near national last Tuesday morning after a brief illness of pneumonia. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 1:00 o'clock p.m. at the church at National. The sorrowing parents and friends have the sympathy of the community. ———§——— Obituary Florence Alwine Marie Matt, daughter of Mr. Theodore Matt and his wife Etta, née Gossmann, was born near National on the 7th day of February 1905. Received into the Christian Church by early baptism, she grew up in her paternal home in the usual way, attending Sunday School at different places, finishing the 8th grade at Garnavillo in 1919, where she also received religious instruction and was confirmed in the Lutheran St. Peter's Church, and later attending High School at Elkader, where she stayed with her relatives. Though an apparently healthy and bright child, her physical constitution was of a very delicate nature, her upper spinal column growing bent sideways and pressuring upon her left shoulder, which was noticed by her parenys for the first time last fall. After having tried other medical cure she was taken to a specialist in Chicago, where she underwent a treatment recently, from where she returned with the hope of finally regaining normal strength and form. Being back home for about a week, enjoying and amusing herself greatly in company with one of her friends Ruth Stickford, who came to visit her, she suddenly fell sick with pneumonia Sunday (August 8) morning at 3:00 o'clock. Probably owing to her otherwise delicate constitution the attack became at once so severe, that the two physicians, who were summoned, could not give any hope of recovery. After having desired and received the holy sacrament of the Lord's Supper, she departed this life Tuesday (August 10th) morning about 9:30, at an age of 15 years, 6months and 3 days, leaving her parents and her little sister Lillian. She was a good child, well deserving and enjoying the love and sympathy of all those who knew her. She showed her tenderhearted disposition of mind especially when taking care of her poor little brother, Jason, who died three years ago. Being an inward nature, different from most children of her age, she preferred to enjoy herself at home with innocent toys of early childhood and loved to read God's Word in the Bible. She dearly loved God and her Savior, and we must regard it as a sign of particular divine grace, that God who loved her first and more than anybody else could, took her home from this world, which would have had in store for her a life of infirmity, that she might enjoy eternal life together with her little brother Jason and all angels and saints.
