"The early morning hours of Saturday witnessed the close of a rare and beautiful life among us. It was the demise of a greatly beloved wife, mother, neighbor and friend, Mrs. Geo. B. Boyce, at the family home north of this village. Born in the adjacent town of Hampton, N.Y. [sic] 65 years ago, all her life had been passed in this vicinity. Her maiden name was Florence C. New. She was the daughter of Alonzo and Charlotte New of the latter town. Forty-three years ago last Christmas she was united in marriage to the one who now mourns the loss of a fond and devoted companion. They soon after removed to the farm home where they have resided during all these years. The fruit of this union was three children, one of whom, a sweet twin daughter, passed away in childhood. The surviving children are Mrs. John C. Brown of Whitehall and Charles N. Boyce of Poultney. Mr. Boyce, who had recently disposed of his farm, was on the eve of removing to Poultney Village to a pleasant home all prepared for their reception, where they expected to spend the sunny hours of life's decline. Our dear Heavenly Father whose ways though often sadly afflictive to us, are full of tender and merciful design, had other, and as the bright future shall reveal, wiser plans in store. The loved wife and mother was to remove to yon heavenly city, whose inhabitants never say ‘I am sick,' there to anticipate a blessed reunion with her precious household, and other friends that to her heart were so dear. Although not in firm health for some time past, none had looked for this sad hour. . "Mrs Boyce was indeed an elect lady. Sunshine was the accompaniment of her long life. She made not only home happy, but every spot was made more beautiful where she moved. Pastors, neighbors, and friends, and the low as well as the high speak through these bygone years of sweet thoughtfulness, mercy and cheer. The wiseman most befittingly portrays the charms of her Christian character. ‘She stretcheth out her hands to the poor, she openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed, her husband, and he also praiseth her.' . "At the funeral, on Monday afternoon, which was very largely attended, the Rev. A. S. Clark of Hampton officiated speaking comforting words from heaven's message respecting the dying Christian, found in Rev. XIV, 13, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.' ‘He giveth His beloved Sleep' was feelingly rendered by Mrs. Grace Harris. The choice of floral tributes which embowered her coffin were from the family and relatives. The bearers were John Ward, J. L. Clark, Ernest Boyce, and Fred Spalding. A brother, Charles R. New, and a sister, Mrs. Marion Ellis, both of East Poultney, survive, also three grandchildren, George and William Boyce of Poultney, and Georgianna Brown of Whitehall. . "Her remains rest in the fair hillside in the quiet Poultney cemetery, overlooking hill, vale, and river ever associated with her life.
