Read More	OBITUARY AND ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT FLORENCE JOHNSON OBITUARY: Florence Effie, second daughter of James and Laura Rogers, was born October 17, 1870 in Wayne county Iowa and departed this life, very peacefully and quietly in keeping with her manner of life, March 11, 1935 at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 24 days. She came with her parents to Jewell county in 1880 which has been her home since. She was united in marriage to William Johnson in 1895 [actually 1894]. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death on December 11, 1915. No children were born to this union, but a son, Robert, and a daughter, Florence, were taken into their home, where they were cared for as their own flesh and blood. The daughter, Florence, passed away at the age of 14. To be acquainted with her was to win a friend, that was steadfast, loyal and true. She was first converted early in life, and afterwards re-consecrated and rededicated her life to her master and the church. She has been a member of the United Bretren church for many years. The Pastor says of her, “In my eleven years of active work in the ministry, I have never found a more devoted, loyal consecrated friend of Christ, the church and the minister.” She read her Bible and observed the quiet hours of her home daily in her home, as well as in the prayer services of her church. She always prayed for her friends, her loved ones and the town in which she resided. Unselfishness was one of her great virtues. Thinking of others, first at home and abroad. Her place will be hard to fill. She leaves to mourn their loss: one son, Robert, four brothers and four sisters: Tom, of Wapata, Washington, Frank, Jeff and Curran of Esbon, Mary Shuck, Laura Ritter, Maud Riemenschneider and Martha Thompson all of Esbon; two grand children, several nieces and nephews, also a great host of friends. (Esbon Times, Esbon, Kansas, March 21, 1935) ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Florence Rogers age 23 married William Johnson age 27 on March 11, 1894 at Ionia, Kansas, according to the Jewell County Kansas marriage records. Census records show that Robert was part of the family in 1910 when he was three years old. The foster daughter Augusta Florence Jantzen, known as Florence, became part of the family after her mother, Gertrude Jantzen, died in 1912 when Florence was 4 years old. Her biological father George Jantzen lived elsewhere but sometimes visited his daughter. In newspaper articles and census records, her last name was sometimes given as Johnson and sometimes as Jantzen. After her husband William died in 1915, Florence E. Johnson remained a single parent and kept both of her children, Robert and Florence. After Augusta Florence Jantzen/Johnson died in 1922, Florence E. and Robert moved from the farm to Mankato, Kansas. A few months later they moved to Esbon, Kansas where Robert graduated from high school in 1925.
