Read More	OBITUARY AND ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT MARTHA THOMPSON OBITUARY: Martha Elizabeth Thompson was born to James and Laura Rogers November 16, 1882, on the Rogers homestead in Jewell County, Kansas. She passed away at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kansas, December 13, 1871, at the age of 89 years. She was a resident of Jewell County until November, 1968, when she moved to Republic, Kansas, to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Loren Silsby, and Reverend Silsby. Due to failing health and her need for constant care, she spent her last year in the Belleview Manor, Belleville, Kansas. On November 4, 1904, she was united in marriage to Winfield Scott Thompson who preceded her in death in January, 1958. Their 53 years together were spent in the vicinity of Esbon, Kansas. They farmed until 1928 when they moved to Esbon to operate a cafe. Her cooking ability and particularly her pies became known and were appreciated by customers from far and near who visited their cafe. Her life was devoted to her home, her husband and their seven children. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a delight to her. There was always room at her table and in her heart for the many friends and relatives, young and old, who came to the Thompson home. She was a member of the Esbon United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid. She belonged to the Auxiliary of the Perry A. Lamb Post of the Esbon American Legion. Those who knew Martha Thompson need no description of her fine qualities. She was loved and will be missed by countless numbers including her five sons and their wives, Harold and Ina, Guide Rock, Nebraska, Claud and Pearl, Guide Rock, Nebraska, Leonard and Rosalie, Conrad, Iowa, Frank and Jacque, Bostwick, Nebraska, Leroy and Mabel, Urbana. Illinois; her two daughters, Leta and Loren Silsby, Republic, Kansas, Elta of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and the late James Kennedy. She had 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and 4 step-grandchildren. One granddaughter preceded her in death. “Aunt Martha” became very special to her many nieces and nephews as they each lost their own parents. She was the last member of her parental family, James and Laura Rogers and their 12 children. Services were held at the Esbon United Methodist Church. December 16 1971 at 2:00 p.m. Reverend Earl Enyeart, Gypsum, Kansas, assisted by Reverend Milton Lenz, pastor of the Esbon Church, officiated. Music was furnished by Earl Silsby, Carol Kindler, and Wanda Thummel. Pallbearers were Harvey Rogers, Benny Kemper, Harry Kindler, Milton Rogers, LaVerne Haegert, and Thompson Smith. Interment was in Esbon Cemetery with Kramer Funeral Home, Mankato, in charge. (Jewell County Record, December 30, 1971) ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Martha Thompson could play the piano and at one time drove a horse and buggy to give piano lessons. She was a member of the local Rebekah Lodge and served as musician. However, in her later years playing the piano was not a part of her life. In the 1950s Martha had to care for her husband, whose declining health required that he use a walker and later a wheelchair. It was in the early 1950s that they converted a bedroom to an indoor bathroom in their house in Esbon. Prior to that, an outhouse was used and baths were in a tub in the kitchen. The house was heated with a gas heating stove in the kitchen and another in the living room. These were adjusted manually with a valve. The bedrooms were not heated. Cold winter evenings were spent sitting by the heating stove in the living room. Their house was small with a large wrap-around porch that was often the center of activities in the summer. There was usually a sofa or bed on the porch that would be used for sleeping during large family gatherings. At their home in Esbon, Martha had a hen house for eggs and a chicken house for chickens to eat, which she would catch and prepare. She also typically had a large garden beside the house, and canned vegetables for winter. She also made quilts and was typically working on a quilt for a family member or for the Ladies Aid Society that made quilts and sold them for charitable purposes. Martha would put out food for any cats in the area, which often resulted in one to two dozen cats around her house. However, she would allow only one cat in the house. After they sold the restaurant, Martha continued to make pies for the restaurant. She would make several pies early each morning. When grandchildren were visiting, she would make each child their own small bowl-sized pie along with the pies for the restaurant. Having their own small pie was very special for the kids.
