The little five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel Bolden, who lives on North Third street was terribly burned this morning about 10:30, by having her clothes set fire to by flaming kerosene. It is the custom in the Bolden household to use kerosene in starting a fire in the kitchen stove. Mrs Bolden started to build a fire this forenoon and poured a cup of kerosene intending to put it into the stove and kindle a fire. Her attention was drawn to something else just then and placing the oil on a low shelf she attended to other duties. Being called outside on a mission she left the little girl in the house alone. Mrs Bolden had hardly reached the outside door of the home before her attention was attracted by the little girls screams. Rushing back into the house the frenzied mother found the babe completely enveloped in flames. She had the presence of mind to get a blanket and soon smothered the flames but not before they had accomplished a terrible work. The child's body was seared from head to foot and the outcome of her injuries cannot be determined as yet. It is supposed the little tot found the can of oil and with the natural inquisitiveness of a child poured the oil into the stove just as she had seen her parents do it many times. _________________________________ Missouri Valley Times - Missouri Valley, Iowa Thursday, September 11, 1902, page 7 Burns Prove Fatal After several hours terrible suffering the little daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel Bolden, died at the family home on North Third Street Saturday afternoon at 5:40. Remains were buried in Rose Hill cemetery this afternoon at 2:30, Rev Campbell officiating. Saturday morning while playing about the house the little tot found a cup half filled with kerosene. Throwing the inflamible fluid into the stove she was instantly covered with flames. Before her mother could reach her side the flames had accomplished their terrible work and the little tot's death followed in a few hours.
