Frances Marker, the fourth child born to Jesse and Lena (Killen) Marker, was born November 18, 1928 and passed away September 7, 2020 at Calvin Community in Des Moines, Iowa. Frances attended Norwood Consolidated School for eleven years and graduated from Chariton High School in 1945. She attended Simpson College for two years and then transferred to Drake University where she earned a Master’s Degree of Science in Education. Frances taught school one year in a one-room country school in Lucas County known as Arnold School. She then spent fourteen years teaching in the Lucas Public Schools and thirty years teaching in the West Des Moines Schools. After teaching forty-five years she retired in 1992. She loved being in the teaching profession. Fran lived out her high school motto “Tis Good to Live and Learn”. She often said that she went to school all her life. The spring she retired she was enrolled in a Drake University class. Her college education was acquired by night classes, Saturday classes and summer school. Frances accepted Christ into her life at the age of nine and was baptized soon after. She was a charter member of the Norwood Assembly of God Church. She taught Sunday school, served as social director, and also served on the church board many years. She cherished her involvement with the church and her church family. She especially believed that Sunday school was in important part of the church. She had a perfect Sunday school attendance record from 1942 to 2010. Frances is survived by brothers, Jerry (Sunny) of Johnston and Larry (Judy) of Woodburn; sisters, Marjorie Fleeman of Knoxville, and Pat Schnoor of Indianola. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Lena, brothers John, Kenneth, and Homer, sisters, Vera Penick and Dorris Pollitt. Frances felt fortunate to have a loving family. She loved life and felt blessed to have lived so long. She enjoyed her role as sister, sister-in-law, and aunt to many loving nieces and nephews. She also cherished her many church friendships as well as many colleagues in the teaching profession. Her special friend and pal, Peggy Sones, was very dear to her. They shared so many good times and car trips. These occasions helped light up their lives, especially their yearly Colorado Trips. Fran lived with glaucoma for many years and had several eye operations. This affected her vision, but she never complained. She loved to “SHOP.” She was in the height of her glory when she could get something for a “SONG” at Younkers. Her collectibles, jewelry, pretty glass lights, and Fenton glass pieces proved this. She loved growing flowers. A well-groomed yard was important to her. She loved pizza, Cinnamon rolls, chocolate and all kinds of pie. She especially enjoyed making dessert and candy during the holiday season. Fran loved the Bill Gaither gospel music, the family gatherings at Christmas, birthdays, reunions and the annual Marker cousins reunion. No birthday celebration was complete without a bouquet of balloons.
