He was born July 31, 1908, son of Frank O. and Mary Ellen (Welch) Black in Helena. He moved to Havre when he was 2, and lived there until Oct. 1996. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. Upon the death of his father, he moved back to Havre to take over the family jewelry store obtaining a degree in Horology from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. He married Laened Pecinovsky on Feb. 5, 1935, in Havre. She preceded him in death Sept. 26, 1996. They owned and operated Black's jewelry for 50 years, until their retirement in 1979. He was a founder of the Montana Jewelers Association, a state trade group for the industry. He was active in local politics and served as Democratic Precinct Committeeman for many years. For several years during World War II, Black worked as an avionics technician at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash. He was a member of the Eagles, Lions and Rotary. He was a lifetime member of Elks and a past exalted ruler. An avid golfer as a young man he won numerous local golf tournaments. In 1940, he acquired a cabin in the Bear Paws where he enjoyed fishing and hunting for the next 50 years. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Growney, Casper, Wyo.; Cythia Schurka, Buffalo, Grove, Ill; and three grandchildren.
