Frank Oliver Black was born in Saltzburg, Penn., March 12, 1880, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Black. The family moved to Helena, Mont., in 1889, where Mr. Black was schooled and where he started the jewelry business, working with Jacob Yund, pioneer Helena jeweler and watchmaker. Mr. Black first came to Havre in 1902 to work for Frank B. Churchill, Havre jeweler. Later he returned to Helena where he was married to Mary Ellen Welch, in 1907, remaining in Helena until 1910 when he moved with his wife and small son, Francis, to Havre. About this time he took over the Churchill jewelry. In the succeeding years Mr. Black built up a highly successful business, in which he had been assisted in recent years by his son. A naturally quiet man, he nevertheless made close friendships, and won the high esteem of the community. In recent years an increasing deafness has prevented his participating a great deal in social life. Until increasing heart disease prevented, he had greatly enjoyed golf, and was prominent in the accomplishments and activities of the Havre Country club. About a year ago he suffered a serious illness from heart disease and since then had lived a very quiet life, although he had given his usual attention to his business in recent months. About a month ago the disease again became severe and he had since been seriously ill at his home. He is survived by his wife, his son, Francis, and a sister, Mrs. Wallace Dearing of Brookfield, Mass.
