Lockwood, pioneer business man of this city, died Saturday evening. His condition had been critical for a week and little hope had been held for his recovery. His daughters, Mrs. T.J. East, of Chelan, and Miss Frances Lockwood, of Olympia, had been summoned ten days ago, on account of his condition, and remained with him until the end. His many years of residence here, and his high character made for him the respect and esteem of all. Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood lost three children after they had grown to manhood and womanhood, and these bereavements weighed heavily on them. Mrs. Lockwood has been an invalid for many years and unable to get out but little. Despite all, Mr. Lockwood went about in his quiet, kindly way seeking to do good, and carry out his high purpose of Christian character. He was uncomplaining; a kind father and a good neighbor. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. T.J. East and Frances Lockwood; a son, Chester; thee sisters, Mrs. W.H. Anderson, Mrs. R.S. Steiner and Mrs. John Morris; two brothers, C.B. Lockwood and George Lockwood. The Rev. H.O. Parry of the Methodist church of Wenatchee, who conducted the funeral from the M.E. church Monday afternoon, and with whom the deceased had worked in the early years of the Methodist church here, paid tribute to the sterling qualities and to the ideals of Mr. Lockwood. Francis Asbury Lockwood was born December 9, 1855, on his father's farm near Deedsville, Indiana. He received his early education in Deedsville and attended high school at Odell, Illinois. He attended normal school at Amboy, Indiana, and went to college in Denver, Indiana, after which he taught school for several years. On December 25, 1879 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Steiner, and to this union were born six children, Theresa, Otto, Chester, Everett, Edith and Frances. He came to Douglas county in January, 1889, walking from Ellensburg, and settled on a preemption two miles north of Waterville. He was deputy auditor under R.S. Steiner (his brother-in-law.) for two years. Later he went into business for himself in which he continued until his death. He affiliated with the Methodist church of Deedsville when he was fifteen years old. In 1891 he tansferred his membership to the Waterville M.E. church and has always been a staunch supporter of the Christian faith. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, and exemplary father, a kind brother and a Christian gentleman. Another paper tells that his death was caused by "a two weeks" illness with influenza which later developed into pneumonia. He leaves his widow, who has been an invalid for many years, and three children, Frances Lockwood, a teacher at Olympia, Mrs. T.J. East of Chelan and Chester Lockwood of the Entiat valley. Mrs. R.S. Steiner, widow of the late Judge R.S. Steiner, is a sister, and Mrs. A.L. Morris of Wenatchee a niece. Two sisters, Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Morris, reside at Bridgeport.
