Description	:	RANCIS R. BARNETT Francis R. Barnett, son of John S. Barnett, was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, March 10, 1845, and died at the home of his son J. R. Barnett April 9, 1923, aged 78 years and 1 month. He came to this locality by steamboat in 1853. In 1863 he enlisted as a recruit in the Civil War, Company C 17th Iowa Infantry. Read More	RANCIS R. BARNETT Francis R. Barnett, son of John S. Barnett, was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, March 10, 1845, and died at the home of his son J. R. Barnett April 9, 1923, aged 78 years and 1 month. He came to this locality by steamboat in 1853. In 1863 he enlisted as a recruit in the Civil War, Company C 17th Iowa Infantry. Much might be said of his army life. He was in two different prisons, first at Milan, Georgia, and later was transferred to the famous Andersonville prison where he was held for seven months, being liberated at the close of the war. Owing to the hardships of prison life, when he left the prison he weighed only 90 pounds, having weighed when he enlisted 160 pounds. He was married to Phoebe Jane Dodson at Albia October 25th, 1865. To this union six children, five sons and one daughter, were born. The wife, one son and the daughter preceded him in death. The sons are W.S., J.R. and J.E. of this place and G.W. of VanWert, Iowa. One brother, John E., living north of town, is the only surviving member of a family of ten brothers and sisters. There are six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. All were present at the funeral services. In early manhood he confessed his faith in Christ and during his seventy years of residence in this community he was known as a man who loved his home and family and was respected for his integrity of character and fair dealings with all. The high esteem in which he was held was manifested by the large number present at the. funeral service, conducted by S.K. Coates of Washington, Iowa, at the home on Wednesday afternoon, April 11th. Members of the J.L. & Ed Linderman Post acted as pall bearers, and assisted by three Civil War veterans, conducted military services at the grave in Highland cemetery.
