Kunkel, one of Plymouth county's long time residents, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Caroline Langel, Saturday morning, January 3. He has been suffering from a heart ailment for the past 8 months. He was 77 years, 3 months and 10 days of age at the time of his death. He was born to Peter and Christina (Digman) Kunkel, Sept. 23, 1870, in Dubuque, Iowa, [Wisconsin] and came with his parents to Plymouth county at the age of 15. In 1894 he was united in marriage to Clara E. Becker, daughter of John and Amelia Becker. He farmed in Plymouth county until 1926, when he retired and moved to Le Mars. Nine children who survive are: Mrs. Albert (Mathilda) Mayrose, Arthur P. Kunkel, Mrs. Al (Agnes) Thill, Felix J. Kunkel and Mrs. Lawrence (Mildred) Nuebel, all of Remsen; Edward Kunkel of Kingsley; Caroline Langel and Mrs. Nick (Dorothy) Kneip of LeMars and Mrs. D. E. (Jeroma) Wernli of Dallas, Oregon; He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, and one son, Dale, who died while serving in service of his country. He is also survived by three brothers: Joe A. Kunkel of Westfield, Val J. Kunkel of Worthington, Minn., and Leo Kunkel of Adrian, Minn., and two sisters: Mrs. Katherine Gergen of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Theo. Kass of Adrian, 37 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic church and interment made in St. Joseph's cemetery with Msgr. J. D. Fisch officiating. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers: Cecil and Lawrence Mayrose, Richard and Orville Kunkel, Loren Kneip and Robert Langel. Wiltgen's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. +++ Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, IA, Thursday, February 1, 1894, pg. 4, col. 3 KUNKEL-BECKER---At St. Joseph church, Le Mars, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 30, Mr. Frank Kunkel and Miss Clara Becker, Rev. Meis officiating. The ceremony was impressive. The music was choice and the great pipe organ never sounded clearer and better. Miss Kunkel was the bridesmaid and Mr. Lanners accompanied the bridegroom. An infair or reception took place at the bride's parents home, John Becker, southeast of this city. It was an elaborate affair. Over 200 were invited and to say all were well fed it only needs to be said Mr. Becker killed a beef, two hogs, two sheep and a whole load of chickens. A portion of the spacious barn was converted into a dance hall. It was well heated and illuminated. Many were present and report a long-to-be-remembered time. May happiness ever walk with Mr. and Mrs. Kunkel.
