Hearing: an explosion of dynamite last night in a tunnel in the Pioneer mine in Humbug: canyon, nine miles from Alta, the miners who were drilling in another drift went to the place where the explosion took place and found the bodies of Fred Bardsley and Peter Colso literally blown to fragments. As the victims were alone at the time of the explosion, the cause of the accident is not known, but it is supposed to have been from a delayed blast which it is thought was overlooked, and was put in by the men on the previous shift. Bardsley was shift boss and Colso was assisting him, and at 10 o clock last night went into the chamber to drill quartz in preparation for another blast. It is thought the fuse was burning when Bardsley and Colso started drilling, and reached the cap almost as soon as they commenced work. The Pioneer mine is an old quartz property on which little development, has been done, and was reopened nearly a year ago. ' Fred Bardsley was about 40 years of age and leaves a family. He is thought to have come to Placer county from Railroad Flat, Calaveras county. Peter Colso was a Hungarian, and his wife is said to be living in Sacramento. Both men had been working in the mine about eight months. Coroner C. B. Hslop went to Towle today to hold the inquest on the bodies, which were packed out from Humbug canyon over a rough and steep trail. Sunday night Fred Bardsley, who is from West Point, was working in one of the stopes of the Kennedy mine and met with a thrilling experience which will occupy a vivid spot in his memory the balance of his life. While standing near the chute a quantity of loosened rock struck him, and pushed him in the chute. He slid down the same, a distance of 80 feet, and reached the bottom in far less disabled condition than one would naturally suppose—a sprained ankle and a few slight cuts and bruises. Under the care of Dr. Gall he expects to be able to tackle his work again in a few days (Delores Araya married R. Dwight Tucker on 4/30/1875 and they divorced before she remarried to John Bardsley 7/30/1879. Based on that, Fred's father is possibly R.Dwight Tucker, not Bardsley).
