The present house on the farm has a plaque dated in 1868. Mrs. Minnie Meier, a daughter of the first Fred Koester was 96 years old when she died a few years ago, and she was born on that farm. The plaques and certificates will be awarded to the families on Wednesday evening, Aug. 29, as part of the Pawnee County Fair. The unique award, co-sponsored by Ak-Sar-Ben, Omaha and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers, is made annually to owners of farms which have remained in the family for 100 years or longer. Koester (1819-1899) served three years in German army service, and years later (1855) left the Hanover home for America, coming by sail boat, the voyage requiring six or seven weeks. Staying a while at a German settlement at DeKalb, Ill., he came to Nebraska in 1856, walking all the way. He staked out his claim in Section 26 in the fertile valley of the South Fork, and built a floorless log cabin. His holdings were added to until he acquired the whole section. It is a worthy statement, that for 100 years his family has kept ownership, a grandson, Fred W. Koester, now living in the fine stone house the grandfather had erected. F. W. K. broke the sod with oxen. He brought early provisions from St. Joseph, a three day trip each way. The nearest grist mill was at Brownville, before the one at Cincinnati was built. In 1867 the cellar for the stone house was dug, and the next year the house was built. Stone was brought in by ox sled. Windows, doors, and shingles were from St. Joseph. Lime for mason work was burned at the Four Mile quarry. Fear of horse thieves, early days, led Koester often to sleep in his wagon with his musket by his side. Koester was 40 years old when he married Miss Sophia Korber, just that year from Hanover, Germany. Sophia's people were wealthy, and thus she aided financially. Sophia born 1826, died 1868, and never enjoyed the fine new house.
