William Koester was born near DuBois, Nebraska May 3, 1864 and died at the Pawnee City hospital January 17, 1947. Practically all of his life was spent in the vicinity of DuBois, mostly on the farm homesteaded by his grandfather. In his early boyhood he attended a log school house south of DuBois. October 25, 1888 he was married to Caroline Boehmer and to this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters. In 1914 Mr. and Mrs. Koester moved to DuBois. Five years later, April 5, 1919, Mrs.Koester died. In June, the following year, Mr. Koester was married to Miss Emma Droge, who passed away in November, 1930. March 30, 1932, Mr. Koester and Mrs. Emma Kneisel of Powhattan, were united in marriage. Mr. Koester was an outstanding citizen of the community, a farmer and a leader in community affairs. He was one of the pioneers in the building of the Friedens church at the present site and was one of its most faithful members. He served as a member of the board of directors of the Telephone Co., was a member of the DuBois school board and president of the Farmers Union Cooperative Association. His wife and four children, Fred and Emil Koester, DuBois, Mrs. Gertrude Barker, Pawnee City, and Mrs. Velma Droge, Denver, Colo., survive him. There are also sisters mentioned in an item elsewhere in the paper. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the Friedens church with Rev. Wallis, pastor of the Methodist church at Pawnee City in charge, assisted by Rev. H. D. Marlatt, Seneca. Burial was in the family lot of the Friedens church cemetery. Page 1, same issue: Brother of Mrs. Kauffman Died In Pawnee Hospital Mrs. W. L. Kauffman received word Friday that her brother, William Koester of DuBois, passed away that morning in the Pawnee City hospital, where he had been a patient 18 months. Had Mr. Koester lived until May of this year he would of been 83 years old. He leaves his wife, two sons, Fred and Emil Koester, DuBois, two daughters, Mrs. Claude Barker of Pawnee City, and Mrs. Albert Droge of Denver, Colo. There are also four sisters, Mrs. Kauffman, Mrs. C. Wm. Meier, DuBois, Mrs. Sophia Meier, Hume, Mo., and Mrs. C. F. Spring, Manhattan.
