WILHELMINA MEIER Wilhelmina Margaretha Bertha Meier, nee Koester, the oldest daughter of Frederick and Sophia Korber Koester, was born near DuBois, Nebraska, on July 6, 1860. She was dedicated to God in Holy Baptism on June 11, 1869, at what was then the St. John's Evangelical church of Nemaha county, Kansas, just south of DuBois, Nebraska. On October 1, 1880 she was united in marriage to C. William Meier. To this union six children were born. One son, Albert, preceded his mother in death in 1946. At Christmas time, the year of their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Meier became members of the Evangelical church south of DuBois and remained members throughout the years. Mrs. Meier was a charter member of the Ladies Aid of her church, and secretary for many years when the meetings were conducted and the records kept in the German language. They lived on the farm from the time of their marriage until 1913, when they moved to the present family home in DuBois. In October, 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Meier with their family, observed the golden anniversary of their marriage. In 1939, Mrs. Meier's sight was impaired. In spite of surgery, the sight of one eye could not be restored, and in 1940 she lost the sight of the other. However, with the help and companionship of her husband, she faced life bravely. In 1942 their daughter, Mrs. Minnie Droge, moved in with her parents, bestowing on them every care and consideration that human hands and a loving heart could give. Through the great hardships of pioneer life, helping to shape the home and the community, Mrs. Meier labored hard through the many years. After a companionship of almost 74 years the earthly union was broken when her husband departed this life June 19, a year ago. After the loss of her husband, her will to live began to break, many times she expressed the hope that she might be relieved of the burden of life and enter into the eternal rest. On May 31, 1955 her daughter found she had faded peacefully into the sleep that finds its morning in the presence of God. She had reached the age of 94 years, 10 months and 25 days. Mrs. Meier is the last of her immediate (Koester) family with the exception of her half-sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Kauffman of Seneca. She is survived by five children, F. W. Meier, H. H. Meier and C. C. Meier all of DuBois; Mrs. Minnie Droge of the home and Mrs. Esther Hildebrand of Pawnee City; and by twenty-seven grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
