Music was by the men's quartet; Edward Peters, Edgar Schulenberg, Hugo Hoegermeyer and Raymond Peters, who sang "Asleep in Jesus". E. A. Luebke accompanied at the organ while the congregation sang "I Fall Asleep in Jesus Wounds" and Mr. Kroeger's favorite hymn, "I'm But a Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home". Pallbearers were Mr. Kroeger's nephews, Edgar Schulenberg, Victor Horst and Gordon Rabe of Hooper, Limer Horst of Denver, Colo., Melvin Havekost of Davenport, Ia., and Roy Bridenstine of Avoca, Nebr. The body was laid to rest in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, north of Hooper. Mr. Kroeger was born on a farm north of Hooper, October 8, 1886. He was baptized, confirmed and remained a live-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church here. He was on the Church Council and a member of the school board for a number of years. He was married on June 1, 1911 to Fredericka Horst and they farmed until 1947 when he retired and moved to Fremont and after a year there the Kroegers moved into Hooper. Mr. Kroeger is survived by his wife, a son, Avillus of Hooper; and three daughters, Mrs. John Suhr of Scribner, Mrs. Dale Sawatelle of Fremont, and Mrs. Herbert Cain of Colorado Springs, Colo. Nine grandchildren, two brothers, Herman of Denver and Harry of Fontana, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Chris Schulenberg of Scribner and Mrs. George Rabe of Winslow. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters. After the committal service relatives and friends were served refreshments in the church basement of St. Johns's by the ladies Aid Society of the congregation. A Memorial Fund has been started in Mr. Kroeger's name for St. John's Church. Out-of-town guests were from Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo., Davenport, Ia., Hartford, S. D., Grand Island, Wisner, Pilger, Beemer, West Point, Avoca, Cedar Bluffs, Lincoln and Fremont.
