He immigrated to Ohio with his parents, sister, and maternal aunt in May 1858. On May 1, 1870, he was confirmed in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Okolona. He married Minnie Behrens on February 27, 1879, in Bethlehem, and they were blessed with 4 children. He lived on the family farm from immigration till his death.
