Mark, jr., 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mark, sr., living on the Lime Kiln road, five miles north of Council Bluffs, was drowned in Pigeon creek late Wednesday afternoon when he was wading with two other boys. The body was later recovered. With Ellsworth Rickabaugh, 14, and Raymond Rickabaugh, 7, brothers, he had gone to pick gooseberries. At the suggestion of Ellsworth, according to his story to Mr. Mark, they went wading into the creek. The boy said he was beside the Mark youth when they stepped off into an eight-foot hole in the creek, which is believed to have been washed out by the recent high waters. Grabbing for each other as they sank, they missed. After going down twice, Ellsworth said, he seized a piece of driftwood and was able to paddle to safety. None of the boys could swim. The Mark boy sank once and never came up. County Coroner Leonard Jackson said that an inspection of the boy's body revealed a bruise on the left temple near the eye. It is believed that he struck a submerged object which turned him and prevented him from coming up. Raymond Rickabaugh had withdrawn from the water just before the accident, as he became frightened when it reached his waist. A man who has been cutting willows along the Missouri river bank dived into the hole and recovered the body. He later left without giving anybody his name or address. H. W. Clark and Fred Jobe, employed on the Beno farm nearby, brought the body to the Jackson mortuary. No inquest will be held. Besides his parents the boy is survived by six brothers and sisters, Sherman, Walter, Frances, Mary, Claire, and Clara. An aunt, Mrs. E. C. Barritt, lives at 1319 Fifth avenue. The funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m., at Jackson's mortuary. Burial will be in Walnut Hill cemetery. Contributor: Iowa Girl (49254126)
